As is well known, the only decisive attribute in the Holy Grail War is Luck, so it is obvious that Kiritsugu's Saber is the weakest...In reality, it is because the compatibility between the two was too poor.
Artoria was born in 5th-century Britain. At this time, the once-mighty Roman Empire had fallen into an era of chaotic warfare and was like a candle in the wind. This empire was once thought to be invincible and impregnable, but at that time, it could only await its fate of being invaded and partitioned by barbarians sooner or later. Preparing to fight to the death with the barbarians, the Roman Empire abandoned its own territory, Britannia, and withdrew all armed forces on the island. Once Britannia lost the empire's protection, it could not escape the cycle of independence, collapse, and fragmentation, and thus quickly split into several small kingdoms. During this period, barbarian invasions and constant warfare between tribes began a long "Dark Age" well-known to later generations.
As the empire on the continent declined, the unrestrained Saxons began to invade Britain for survival.
Among the warring lords of Britain, the Usurper King Vortigern utilized foreign tribes in an attempt to unify Britain. The previous king, Uther Pendragon, was the last king endowed with mystery by the Isle of Britain. Fifteen years ago, King Uther was defeated by the Usurper King, which gave rise to the idea of placing hope in the next generation of kings. However, as the mystery of the Isle of Britain was waning day by day, it was uncertain whether the next king would still receive Britain's protection. Therefore, Uther and the magus Merlin came up with a bold idea: while the previous king protected by Britain was merely beyond mortal, the new king would be on a non-human level from the very beginning. They performed a conceptual fertilization, combining the lineage of the King of Britain, the lineage of the incarnation of Britain—the Red Dragon, and the womb used to fuse the two—the noble woman, the lineage of Igraine, Duchess of Cornwall. Without any romance, King Arthur was born in this way.
However, Artoria was a female, making it difficult for her to succeed as king. Moreover, contrary to previous estimations, Artoria's elder half-sister, Morgan—the daughter of Igraine and the Duke of Cornwall—had fully inherited the mystery of the previous king and was a rare witch.
Ten years ago, Merlin released a prophecy: "The successor to King Uther has already been chosen. This person is the next king. When the incarnation of the Red Dragon, the new king, appears, the Knights of the Round Table will assemble, and the White Dragon will be defeated. The king is still alive, and proof of that will appear before long."
From then on, every British knight looked forward to the new king, and there was a restlessness that they themselves might be the chosen new king. Meanwhile, the Usurper King violently searched for the new king because of this prophecy.
When Artoria was about five years old, she was taken into the home of the old knight, Sir Ector. Ector's son, Kay, was also told by his father, "You must discipline your younger brother well as an elder brother," and he roughly understood the situation. From then on, Artoria lived a life of poverty in her foster father's home. As an apprentice knight, she was trained in swordsmanship and etiquette by Ector, while also participating in farming like her father and brother. In Ector's house, she was raised as a boy and called Artorius by the neighbors.
Artoria spent most of her day receiving the education of a king, and in her free time, she had to tend to the horses and patrol the village. Kay once asked Artoria how long she could sleep, and that fellow actually replied with a smile, "Brother, do not worry. I rest well from the early hours of the morning until before sunrise." In reality, she slept for less than three hours, and after Kay met Merlin, he learned something he didn't want to know: during her sleeping hours, she was also being instilled with the king's teachings by the incubus magus through magecraft.
Ten years after the prophecy was made, the day of selection finally arrived—the day Artoria was destined to pull out the Sword of Selection. During morning practice, Ector could not hide the reluctance in his eyes, while Artoria pretended not to see it. After handing a set of knight's gear belonging to Kay to Artoria, Ector told her that after she delivered the items to Kay, her lessons for the day were over. When they arrived in town, the townspeople were immersed in a festive atmosphere. Merlin had thrust the Sword of Selection into the stone the day before and announced that whoever could pull out the sword would be the new King of Britain.
Yesterday and today, countless knights failed before the Sword of Selection. After Kay took the knight's gear brought by Artoria, he uttered a few characteristically sharp-tongued remarks and distanced himself from her to participate in that destined-to-be-meaningless jousting match. "Of course. Go back to the old man. If others see you, they'll tease me again. Think about the hard work I put in always getting you out of trouble. Listen well. This is the first and last chance; go home quietly."
In the distance was a festive atmosphere; knights were engaged in mock battles, and no one stood before the Sword of Selection.
| “ | Honestly. That foul mouth of his is the only flaw. ...Thank you, Brother Kay. But, I'm sorry. I don't know what the ideal king Ector spoke of looks like. | ” |

The sword fit her hand unexpectedly well; something that had never surged within her body before flowed into the sword, her body became light, and all that remained was to draw it.
| “ | You should think carefully before you take that up. I won't harm you, so don't do it. Once you take up that sword, you will no longer be human until the very end. Not only that. Once you take it up, you will be hated by all of humanity and meet a tragic death. | ” |
From behind her came the voice of the magus she had always seen in her dreams.
| “ | ——No, many people are smiling. I believe that it certainly cannot be wrong. | ” |
...At that time, she was actually still afraid.
It wasn't fear of her own end. Rather, it was fear of whether this decision was truly correct.
The person who draws the sword from the stone—the fear that there might be someone more suited to be the promised king, and that if it were that person, they could build a more peaceful country.
However, there was no such person. At least, none would appear for another ten years. In the meantime, someone had to take on this duty.
Drawing the sword and becoming someone else.
Everything she had feared until now became a thing of the past.
This was a ritual to kill her own self.
If one possesses a human heart, one cannot protect everyone as a king.
The so-called King is an existence who kills the most people in order to protect the people.
The young girl thought about that every night, trembling until dawn. Not a single day passed without her being afraid. However, that would also end today.
No matter how many times she would be alienated, feared, or even betrayed from then on, her heart would not change.
To live for the people,
To live together with the people,
To leave a future for the people.
That is what it means to be entrusted with a nation. What it means to show the proof of a King.
—And what it means to live within the responsibilities of a King.
For the sake of her most precious thing,
She chose to bid farewell to the most precious thing she saw in her dreams.
| “ | Ah, you have chosen a difficult path. But miracles come at a price, King Arthur. You shall exchange it for your most precious thing. | ” |
The sword was pulled out as if it were meant to be, and the area was filled with sunlight at that moment.
She became something that was not human.
The King's gender did not matter, and no one would notice anything strange about the King's appearance as long as the King's actions were indeed "the actions of a King." Although no one noticed their King was a woman, it seemed insignificant given that she was a wise ruler. Thus began the life of this legendary King; from the moment she pulled out the "Golden Sword of the Chosen" (Caliburn), she stopped aging and remained forever at the age of 15.It gave Shirou a chance; if she hadn't stopped growing, please refer to Lancer Artoria and imagine the scene.
After pulling out the holy sword, Artoria began to travel and train across various lands with Kay and Merlin. They caused quite a bit of trouble on the road, which usually started with Artoria's meddling, escalated by Merlin's mockery, and finally ended with Kay cleaning up the mess.
Over the next ten years, Artoria grew into a feudal lord much like her father, and during this time she gathered many knights, including the Knights of the Round Table who would become famous in later generations.Host ClubA group of King-fans gathered together. Her growth stopped at the moment she pulled the sword, and because of the magical power contained within the Sword in the Stone, many knights felt fear, considering it a divine sign. Most, however, viewed their King's immortality as a sacred symbol. Under her leadership, the Usurper King Vortigern was defeated.

She appointed Sir Kay as the Minister of State and Sir Agravain as the Chief Aide to handle government affairs while she was away at war, while she herself continued to lead her army on the front lines.
The King's combat posture was as if she were a work of art meticulously crafted by the God of War. She was on the front lines at all times, and unlike other kings, no enemy dared to block her path. Of course, at that time, it was impossible to defeat a human who was of the Dragon Kind.So a clone was neededShe achieved great victories in twelve battles over the next ten years, and as the King of Britain, she attained great achievements that previous kings had never reached. She never retreated in disgrace due to defeat, nor was she ever humiliated because of failure.
In a certain duel, because Merlin went off to flirt with a beautiful woman and fell for Morgan's trap, Caliburn ended up breaking. At that time, in order to keep marching without letting everyone discover the holy sword was gone, King Arthur's face turned incredibly pale. To replace it, the Lady of the Lake presented the Holy Sword of the Planet—Excalibur, the Sword of Promised Victory, which had been used by the original holy sword to fight against alien invaders.
She was raised in the way of a king and fulfilled her duties as a king in her own way.
Because the issue of an heir became tricky with the truth that the King was female, Merlin used magic to, at some unknown time, nighttemporarily turned Artoria into a male. The earliest recorded gender reassignment surgery
During this period, Artoria's sister,Morgan le Fay, enchanted Artoria with magecraft and extracted some of her ancestral chromosomes(as everyone understands), and gestated them in her own womb, finally creating a homunculus who was also a clone of Artoria, namedMordred。
Mordred was born with no knowledge of Artoria in her mind, and due to the accelerated aging characteristic of homunculias part of Morgan's plan for her to seize the throne within ten years, she appeared much older and, through her own efforts and Morgan's recommendation, became the last seat of the Knights of the Round Table, replacing Galahad. While hiding her identity, she also idolized her KingFather, and she felt very confident in her legitimate right of succession.
One day, when no one else was around, Mordred took off her helmet before the throne and claimed her right of succession. Despite being shocked by this revelation, Artoria completely rejected Mordred's request, refusing to recognize her as the future heir. The earliest manifestation of "not understanding the hearts of men"
Mordred believed she was not accepted solely because of her father's anger toward Morgan. Because of this unchangeable fact, no matter how hard she tried, she would only drift at the last seat of the Round Table, viewed by her father as an existence that defiled the King. From then on, King Arthur turned Mordred's love and passion for her into an equal measure of resentment and jealousy, all of which was part of Morgan le Fay's plan.Is this "just as planned"?
Artoria married Guinevere shortly after this incident, but it was merely out of a king's duty.
The fact was, inThe WeddingThat night, Guinevere learned the truth about the King; she was one of the few who knew the King's gender. Thus, the First Knight of the Round Table and Artoria's closest friend, Lancelot, spoke with Guinevere with the intention of easing the King's worries, only to unexpectedly learn the King's truth as well and discover the burden Guinevere had been carrying all these years. From then on, they fell in love, and Guinevere kept it from Artoria, claiming she found "complete liberation" when with Lancelot. The source of a legend's downfall is often NTR.
Lancelot shared the same ideal as the King: to create a peaceful and stable Britain. He decided to bear the pain of knowing the King's truth alongside Guinevere, but in a way that would not plunge the country into crisis. Throughout it all, at least for the time being, King Arthur did not notice anything unusual about her subordinates. It could be said that this was caused by her giving up her human emotions.
Artoria had to try her best to act like a king's son, because the era of kingship at the time could not tolerate a woman ruling over vast territories and numerous knights.
Although some initially questioned Artoria's delicate features, only her father, Merlin, Sir Kay, Sir Ector, and later Guinevere knew the King's true origins. Later, she naturally locked away her emotions tightly, thereby concealing her identity, and from then on, no one raised any further objections to her petite appearance.People of Britain, your eyes are all...
Although Artoria stated in "Fate/Hollow Ataraxia" that standing on the front lines with this body and appearance indeed lacked some intimidation, she was still called the "King with a Sun-like Countenance" by the knights.Certain Lancer/Saber shippers are laughing.
In that era, people lived in a world suffering from barbarian bullying, and they desperately needed a powerful king to rule them; the knights would only follow an excellent commander.
It was because she met the aforementioned conditions, which were almost impossible to achieve simultaneously, that no one dared to oppose her.
In the eyes of both her enemies and the people of her own country, she was seen as a symbol of fairness and selflessness. Although both enemies and citizens died in the wars, the King's choices were always considered correct and unerring, and no one dared to voice their own opinion before a King whom everyone deemed to be right.
Indeed, her army easily reorganized the cavalry units they had just lost, remained almost unscathed while crushing invading barbarian forces, and as they swept across the battlefield, fortresses specifically built to defend against King Arthur were smashed and collapsed. Their enemies did indeed fall apart with her intervention, but many gave their lives to achieve these results, and the army's supplies inevitably drained local villages. In *Fate/stay night*, there is a description: squeezing a village dry to prepare armaments before a war, then subjugating the foreign invaders before they could destroy the territory, thus protecting ten other villages. Therefore, it is said that no knight killed more people than she did, and it was not only the vengeful spirits of enemies that fell under Artoria's sword.
She kept her original oath firmly in mind: a King cannot rule a country while filled with human emotions.
Therefore, while sitting on the throne, she never showed any signs of sadness, and she was able to handle all matters within the kingdom, large and small, with near-omnipotent attention to detail.
She handled affairs without error and punished enemies without partiality.
It was precisely because of this, after winning countless battles and leading the people methodically, that one of the knights under her command murmured: "King Arthur doesn't understand human hearts."SuspectTristanHas already confessed to the above facts in Chaldea.
Originally, sinceA certain Kingdecided to rebel against the gods andA certain Kingafter returning the miracles bestowed by God to the heavens, the Age of Gods had already begun to slowly recede from the surface of the earth. The Isle of Britain was only because it was the place on the planet closest to the Inner Sea of the Planet that this process was delayed by fifteen hundred years. However, even the invincible King Arthur could not avoid the destruction of the land of Britain itself and the end of the Age of Gods. The originally rich and fertile land saw its output dwindle as the Mana of the Age of Gods declined, and the food on the island gradually became insufficient for survival, only barely sustained by supplies from Sir Lancelot's territories in France, but all this was destined not to last. King Arthur was not a King recognized by everyone, but a false King who was only accepted during the period when the reign was going smoothly. In the end, King Arthur became a sacrifice offered by the people to the Isle of Britain.
Indeed, more and more knights no longer believed that King Arthur could lead them, and several prestigious Knights of the Round Table left Camelot, such asGalahad、Percivalthose who went to search for the Holy Grail, and even Kay left using a random excuse. However, Artoria accepted the facts calmly, treating it as an inevitable part of governance, which further distanced her from the knights. Having discarded her human emotions, she would not stop even when being abandoned, feared, or betrayed.
For someone who sees these events as a mere drop in the ocean, there is no right or wrong. After all, the King's heart was essentially that of a dragon; one cannot expect a dragon to view issues from the same perspective as a human.
Thus, Artoria's final battles unfolded while others were estranged from her; the Battle of Badon undoubtedly became the epic peak of King Arthur's life. King Arthur's army even campaigned as far as Rome, defeating the Sword Emperor Lucius.
Finally, in the tenth year, the barbarians were shocked by Artoria's overwhelming results and came to sue for peace. The entire island of Britain returned to a brief period of peace, and the country seemed to be getting on the right track, just as she had dreamed at the age of fifteen. The flags were raised high
The affair between Lancelot and Guinevere was eventually exposed. Some knights who had left Camelot used this as leverage to oppose Artoria. At the same time, influenced by Artoria's silence, Agravain of Iron and Mordred led several knights to catch them in the act. During their escape, Lancelot and Guinevere accidentally killed Agravain and Gawain's two sons. After Agravain's death, Britain, which was already in a depression, lost its excellent prime minister and spiraled further downward.
Artoria did not treat this as an act of treason, but rather believed it was entirely due to Guinevere's sincere efforts to protect the secret of her gender, for which she expressed understanding. However, she still acted according to the King's code of conduct, and thus Guinevere was sent to the stake according to the law. Lancelot could not possibly stand by at this time; he intervened in the execution, took Guinevere away, and in the clash between the two sides, killed Gaheris andGareth. As their brother,Gawainhe flew into a rage and swore to break off all ties. This led to a tragedy where there was no right or wrong.
The scabbard of Excalibur was stolen when Artoria crossed the English Channel to crusade against Lancelot, who had fled to his own territory; when she returned to the island exhausted after hearing news that Lancelot had simply gone into seclusion, she found that Britain had already fallen apart due to internal strife. However, according to "Garden of Avalon," Artoria lost the scabbard during the campaign against Rome, and Merlin left her at that time as well.
The legend of King Arthur ends with the final great battle of the age of chivalry. The rebel army led by Mordred and the royal army led by King Arthur fought their final battle on Camlann Hill (which, according to research, may be located near present-day Salisbury). Many Knights of the Round Table sacrificed their lives in this battle—Sir Gawain died when his old wound from the duel with Lancelot was struck by Mordred; Sir Kay, though he had long since left the Round Table, still fought for the King until the very last moment, dying without ever seeing King Arthur again. Having purged many of her former subordinates and subjects, the victory the rebels thought was within reach turned into a stalemate lasting seven days and six nights. Finally, she pierced the chest of the Knight of Treachery, Mordred, with the Holy Spear Rhongomyniad, and Mordred in turn shattered Artoria's skull with the royal sword Clarent.A powerful Battle Continuation ability, the only skill that is not an imitation of King Arthur.
The dying King Arthur was escorted to the Isle of Fairies by the last Knight of the Round Table, Bedivere.
Artoria ordered the grieving Bedivere to return Excalibur to the Lake of Fairies; however, as Bedivere departed, she was still thinking about her mistakes, regretting her choice to become king. Long before, on the Hill of Camlann, before she drew her last breath, the Collective Unconscious of Mankind—the Counter Force Alaya—had entered into a contract with her, promising to grant Artoria the opportunity to find the Holy Grail that could fulfill any wish (she would "obtain and use the Holy Grail while alive," so strictly speaking, she in the Fourth and Fifth Holy Grail Wars is an incomplete Servant, an incomplete Heroic Spirit who hasn't actually died yet and cannot spiritualize; furthermore, being summoned in the Fifth Holy Grail War, she still retains memories of the Fourth. Her "summoning" is essentially a form of time leap that bypasses the Throne of Heroes, being summoned to different eras at the moment just before her temporary death, and returning to that moment after the Holy Grail War is over; as long as she does not obtain the Holy Grail, she will continue to be summoned without dying), while also requiring Artoria to become a Heroic Spirit after her death once she obtained the Holy Grail to fulfill her wish (because she failed to protect Britain, she wished to return to the time she pulled out the Sword in the Stone to choose a king again, erasing her own existence as king).
At the end of the Fate route, she accepted herself and her fate, destroying the Greater Grail of her own will, thereby violating the contract to become a Heroic Spirit; in the end, she did not go to the Throne of Heroes, but instead returned to Avalon.
In the real world, King Arthur was buried in the abbey of Glastonbury, a small town in Somerset, England. Sir Thomas Malory recorded her epitaph in his work "Le Morte d'Arthur" as: "
Saber was, by [someone] representing the Einzbern family in theKiritsugu Emiyasummoned.
Jubstacheit von Einzbern, the current head of the Einzbern family, brought Kiritsugu into the family as a son-in-law and gifted him the catalyst recently excavated from Cornwall: Avalon, the scabbard of King Arthur's legendary holy sword Excalibur, in order to summon the legendary King Arthur.
Although Kiritsugu Emiya was greatly surprised that King Arthur was a woman after the summoning, and felt angry that those around her would let such a young girl bear such a heavy burden, none of this changed his established plan. From the very beginning, Kiritsugu gave up on communicating with Saber.
He had Saber partner with his wife, Irisviel von Einzbern, a homunculus known as the vessel of the Lesser Grail, and travel to Fuyuki to give others the impression that the Einzberns were still using a homunculus as a Master, while he handled matters in his own way in the shadows.
Saber did not know that the catalyst used to summon her was Avalon, and the scabbard was implanted into Irisviel by Kiritsugu without her knowledge.
Saber and Irisviel traveled together by plane from the Einzbern Castle in Germany to Fuyuki, specifically because of Saber's unique state of being unable to spiritualize.
Kiritsugu separated from them and, in Fuyuki, with hiswith whom he had an ambiguous relationship,AssistantMaiya Hisau,to meet.
That night, Saber encountered their first opponent of the trip, Lancer. Although they fought a relatively fair battle, her left hand was wounded by Lancer's Noble Phantasm "Gae Buidhe," and this unhealable wound prevented her from using her swordsmanship and her own Noble Phantasm to their full potential. This man has a few tricks up his sleeve
The battle was then interrupted by Rider, who proclaimed the superiority of his own kingship while inviting Saber and Lancer to join his army. However, as a king herself, Saber stated she would not bow to another king. Archer later arrived on the scene, believing his kingship to be far superior to everyone present. Berserker, after fighting Archer to a draw, showed intent to fight Saber and launched a sudden attack, making the situation even more complicated. When Lancer was forced by a Command Spell to eliminate Saber alongside Berserker, Rider interrupted this unfair battle and suggested that Lancer and Saber fight to the death at a later date.
That night, none of the Servants caused any further trouble.
Saber and Irisviel encountered the deranged Caster on their way back to the Einzbern Winter Castle on the outskirts of Fuyuki, and Caster, becauseJeanneof the similarity in the color of Saber's soul,Lawful Goodmistook her for someone else. When Saber drove him away without hesitation, she could not make Caster realize his mistake; instead, he became convinced that he had to save the wandering Jeanne d'Arc from God's curse.
Just as Kiritsugu set out to assassinate Lancer's Master, Kayneth El-Melloi Archibald, in order to heal the wound on Saber's left hand, Lancer and Caster attacked the Winter Castle simultaneously.
Saber was holding a strategy meeting with Kiritsugu and Irisviel inside the castle, and she began to feel contempt for Kiritsugu's tactics and attitude toward the Holy Grail War. Not only did he attack Lancer's Master, with whom Saber had an agreement, without informing her, but he also avoided Caster's direct threat to let him fight other Servants. Saber and Kiritsugu did not exchange a word, and soon after, Caster appeared, taunting Saber by slaughtering many kidnapped children.
Saber quickly entered combat mode, but the injury to her left hand prevented her from breaking through Caster's Noble Phantasm: Prelati's Spellbook.
After exterminating countless monsters, she could no longer find any openings in Caster's defense.
Eventually, she encountered Lancer; Kayneth had sent him to deal with Saber while he faced Kiritsugu alone. Kiritsugu skillfully exploited the pride of a magus to fight him, which is a weakness shared by almost all magi., however, Lancer decided to help Saber for the sake of their promised knightly duel.
Just like her left hand, Lancer eventually used Gae Dearg to slash Prelati's Spellbook through the Invisible Air released by Saber, thereby forcing Caster to retreat.
Afterwards, Lancer sensed that his Master had been defeated in the battle against Kiritsugu, and Saber, out of chivalry, agreed to let Lancer go and rescue his master.
Next, Saber rescued Irisviel, who had been dealt a fatal blow by Kirei Kotomine in the woods, because she unexpectedly injected long-absent magical energy into the Avalon inside Irisviel's body.
Meanwhile, Kiritsugu once again acted as a lone wolf, distancing himself from them.
After a short period of rest, the Gordius Wheel driven by Rider shattered the peace; he suggested a bloodless war to determine the ownership of the Holy Grail, using a "Banquet of Kings" to see who was worthy of obtaining it.
Battling with wine, Rider, Saber, and Archer, who happened to be invited along the way, discussed their methods of governing their nations and their own paths of kingship in the castle courtyard.
During the Banquet of Kings, Saber expressed her desire to use the Holy Grail to change the established fact of her country's downfall. This statement was ridiculed by Rider: "It is not the king who offers his life, but the nation and its people who offer their lives and livelihoods to the king, never the other way around." Just as Saber thought this was merely the way of a tyrant, Rider later explained what true kingship meant, adding, "Perhaps the banner of justice and ideals you hold high can save a nation and its people, but what kind of end awaits those who only know how to be saved?" Gen Urobuchi later admitted that he indeed messed up Saber's characterization in this part, and Kinoko Nasu also playfully scolded Urobuchi afterwards (metaphorically), re-educating him and writing Garden of Avalon to clean up the mess.
Later, the meeting was interrupted by the intruding Assassins; to demonstrate his path of kingship, Rider used his strongest Noble Phantasm, Ionioi Hetairoi, to show that a king is not a solitary existence, slaughtering all the Assassins.
After the Banquet of Kings ended, Saber continued to deny Rider's ideas, but her heart was indeed wavering, recalling the phrase "King Arthur does not understand human hearts."
Afterwards, Saber and Irisviel went to the Japanese-style house Kiritsugu had just purchased, located above the Fuyuki spiritual pulse, to construct a magic circle. This is the same magic circle Shirou would later use to summon Saber., and Irisviel revealed the flaws of being a homunculus vessel for the Lesser Grail.
Meanwhile, Caster prepared to curse God in his own way, releasing a giant sea monster and absorbing himself into it. Simultaneously, Saber, Lancer, and Rider joined forces to attack the giant monster in the Mion River; however, the sea monster's regenerative abilities were extraordinary, much like the Hydra of Greek mythology—cut off one head and two more grow back—and the three of them had no way to completely defeat Caster.
Even though Kiritsugu sniped Caster's Master from a distanceRyuunosuke Uryuu, Caster's monster continued to spread, and Archer had no intention of using his Noble Phantasm to kill the Sea Monster, as it would stain his treasures. Afterwards, Archer gleefully piloted Vimana(Nuclear-powered ancient Indian aircraft) and engaged in a fierce aerial battle with the fighter jet controlled by Berserker, completely ignoring the crisis on the ground.
However, Kiritsugu provided the only solution, telling Lancer that Saber possessed an Anti-Fortress Noble Phantasm, but because Saber's left hand was crippled, she couldn't use it, leaving Lancer to decide what to do. Out of his spirit of chivalry, Lancer broke Gáe BuidheGáe Dearg: "I will give you your revenge", allowing Saber's left hand to return to normal. Saber was then able to use her full strength to release her Anti-Fortress Noble Phantasm, Excalibur, slaying Caster's giant Sea Monster (otherworldly octopus). This is why Saber only hates eating octopus in "Fate/hollow ataraxia"except for takoyaki
After Rider dispelled his Reality Marble nearby, he discussed with Archer and concluded that this young girl would never have true loveShirou: What did you say?, while Archer became even more determined in his desire to marry Saber.
Afterwards, Saber fought Lancer as promised; although her left hand had recovered its function, Saber, fearing that guilt would slow her thinking, still used only her right hand to duel Lancer.
What was expected to be the most satisfying battle of this Holy Grail War was interrupted by the sudden appearance of Kiritsugu Emiya, who brought a Self-Geas Scroll and used Kayneth's wife as leverage, demanding that Kayneth use a Command Spell to order Lancer to commit suicide in exchange for a contract that Kiritsugu would never harm the Kayneth couple.
Kayneth finally signed the contract and steeled his heart to make Lancer commit suicide.Since ancient times, Lancers have had Rank E Luck; poor Lancer has no Master., Lancer cursed the wishes granted by the Holy Grail before he died and dissipated in regret. Saber was left speechless; she could not imagine her Master being so tyrannical, using any means necessary to achieve his goals. Afterward, Kiritsugu ordered Maiya, who was already in ambush, to fire upon the Kayneth couple, killing them without violating the contract. Sola-Ui died on the spot, while Kayneth barely survived. He pleaded with Kiritsugu to finish him off, but Kiritsugu refused due to the contract. Saber, intending to end his suffering, decapitated Kayneth. Saber loudly denounced Kiritsugu as a heretic, but Kiritsugu retorted that war is about using any means necessary, and his goal was to use the Holy Grail to save the world. He questioned what difference there was between fighting a war through righteous or evil means.
On the final day of the Holy Grail War, Saber encountered the long-out-of-control Berserker and fought him in an underground parking garage. She realized he was a knight she had a connection with because Berserker was able to catch the supposedly invisible Excalibur with his bare hands. Saber demanded Berserker reveal his identity, and Berserker responded by drawing "Arondight" (The Unfading Light of the Lake), causing the black mist to dissipate. Upon learning that the Berserker before her was her once most trusted friend, the First Knight of the Round Table, Lancelot, Saber felt a deep sense of despair. Her mental state collapsed.. Rider's words then came to Saber's mind, making her believe that Berserker's madness was entirely caused by Lancelot's hatred for her.
Just as Kariya (Berserker's Master) lost all his magical energy, Saber took advantage of Berserker's sudden pause and silently pierced him with her invisible sword.
Saber apologized, saying she wanted the Holy Grail to change the fate of her kingdom, as well as Lancelot's fate. After the contract with Kariya was severed, Berserker finally regained his sanity. He desperately yearned for the King to punish him for his illicit love with Guinevere. He felt that for the Knights of the Round Table, Saber was the best King; everyone thought so. As he was fading away, Saber wanted to say he was her loyal subject, but she couldn't say a single word.
This reality further strengthened her determination to use the Holy Grail to change fate. To her surprise, after Saber found the location of the Holy Grail, Gilgamesh was already waiting there. He decided to take Saber as his wife right then and there, easily paralyzing her movements. Saber firmly refused, citing that the Holy Grail she dreamed of was right before her eyes, so how could she give up? At this critical moment, Kiritsugu arrived. Saber was full of hope that her Master's arrival would turn the tide of battle, using the power of two Command Spells to defeat Gilgamesh so she could obtain the Holy Grail.
However, Kiritsugu Emiya, who had already seen through the true nature of the Holy Grail, used his final Command Spell to order Saber to destroy it.
Excalibur destroyed the Greater Grail, but its contents spilled across the land. The center of Fuyuki was completely slaughtered, the earth forever cloaked in colors of desolation and fire, killing almost everyone in the area.
After the Holy Grail disappeared, Saber was sent back to the battlefield of Camlann. Recalling the words of Lancelot and Rider, she could only silently shed tears, condemning her experiences after becoming King and believing she could never be a King. Once again, the writing went off the rails; while Nasu was writing "Garden of Avalon," he was slapping Urobuchi, and the Warrior of Love could only weep in silence.
Thus, she was the sixth Servant to disappear in the Fourth Holy Grail War, and also the last Servant to disappear.
Artoria was still praying for a chance to search for the Holy Grail again, and just then, the dawn of opportunity appeared in the sky.
Note: Because the Fourth Holy Grail War described in Fate/Zero and the descriptions in the Fate/Stay Night game text have significant discrepancies, this section lists a summary of the FSN version of the Fourth War by Bilibili uploader Father SHIROU based on the game text, which differs from most subsequent works.

In the Fate side material booklet released with the original game in 2004, it mentions that Kiritsugu Emiya was: someone who deceived enemy Masters during the Holy Grail War, took lovers as hostages, and then blew up entire buildings, acting like a villain just like Kotomine in his youth. Based on the detail in the game background that there was only one Twin Tower, the story of Kiritsugu blowing up the building should have already been conceived by Nasu. Kiritsugu fought without mercy, not afraid to use underhanded methods, a complete killing machine Kiritsugu defeated most Masters; the only one who survived fighting him was Kirei Kotomine. Throughout the Holy Grail War, Kiritsugu only spoke three sentences to Saber; the two had a relationship of mutual utility, without showing too clear a discord. Saber also evaluated Kiritsugu: "He is not cruel, nor is he a murderer. Although Kiritsugu and Saber had no verbal communication, the two won all the way. At the end of the war, although incomplete, the Holy Grail still descended and was handed to Kiritsugu. At this moment, Kiritsugu chose to reject the Grail, and Kirei touched the Grail first, wishing for everyone on this land to disappear. The Grail granted his wish, though Kirei claimed only the result was achieved, but the process was different from what he imagined. (This is completely different from the Fate/Zero plot where Saber destroying the Grail caused the destruction and disaster; currently, only the 2006 Fate/Stay Night anime restored the original Great Fuyuki Fire completely unaffected by the Fate/Zero plot.) Subsequently, in the sea of fire, Saber fought Archer, and Kirei fought Kiritsugu. Kiritsugu defeated Kirei but did not kill him; however, Saber did not defeat Archer, nor did she know Archer's true name, Gilgamesh. Archer also did not know the power of Saber's Noble Phantasm (which is why in the Fifth War, Gilgamesh says: "I've wanted to see it for a long time"), but the plot of Archer proposing to her was already confirmed. (This sea of fire battle plot is also currently only restored in the 2006 Fate/Stay Night anime.) Subsequently, Saber disappeared, the black mud overflowed, and the black mud poured onto Kiritsugu and Kotomine, as well as Gilgamesh who hadn't had time to disappear. Due to the influence of the black mud, Kiritsugu's physical condition deteriorated rapidly, and he died young at the age of 34.[11]。 |

Shirou Emiya was silenced by Lancer because he witnessed the fight between two Servants. After his heart was pierced by a spear at school, he wasa certain person'sHe was revived by a jewel pendant, but upon standing up, he was pursued again by Lancer and continued to flee, eventually reaching the shed at his home.
In the days following the start of the Fifth Holy Grail War, after receiving the Command Spells, Shirou had been seeing the blurry silhouette of Excalibur in his dreams. In reality, this was the effect of Avalon, which Kiritsugu had implanted within him; because it resonated with the magical flow in Shirou's body, the concept of "swords" frequently appeared in his subconscious, and even his magical affinity became "Sword." While attempting to escape Lancer's pursuit, he struggled into the shed engraved with a magic circle set up by Irisviel ten years prior, which happened to meet the summoning conditions, as Kiritsugu mentioned in Fate/Zero that summoning a Heroic Spirit does not require large-scale magecraft, only a catalyst and a summoning circle, with the circle itself not requiring many complex connections.
The combination of two catalytic factors: Avalon within Shirou and the existing magic circle, completed the summoning.
Amidst the beautiful sound of clashing steel like silver bells, the knight who appeared from the magic circle spoke:
| “ | I ask you, are you my Master? | ” |
| —Words that could be remembered vividly even in hell | ||
A profile slightly turned back, calm and peaceful holy green eyes, time became eternal in that instant. Blue clothes swaying in the wind, only a faint glimmer of light entering the shed, hair like golden sand moistened by the moonlight—that scene, the boy would, untilthe end of his life, keep etched in his heart.
After Saber quickly confirmed that thebewilderedboy before her was the Master she was contracted to, she immediately engaged the enemy. She held the upper hand using the invisible sword created by Invisible Air until Lancer used Gae Bolg. After she barely dodged Lancer'scertain-killstrike, she deduced Lancer's true name while bearing a significant wound. Lancer retreated under his Master's orders, and Saber used her utmost ability to heal the wound afflicted by the incurable curse.
At this point, relying on her senses to detect Servants, and after realizing Emiya Shirou was a novice Master, Saber moved to intercept Rin and Archer, who had come to save Shirou. Here, the game branches into three routes; if the Command Spell is not used to make Saber stop, it will lead to the Fate or Heaven's Feel routes; otherwise, it will enter the Unlimited Blade Works route.

In the Fate route, Saber becomes the heroine and Shirou's love interest.
Saber severely wounds Archer, who is then forced into spirit form by Rin Tohsaka using a Command Spell. Afterward, Saber puts on a raincoat to hide her identity and follows Rin and Shirou to the church, waiting outside. Shirou ultimately decides to participate in the Holy Grail War, and as the two emerge from the church, they encounter another pair of participants—Illya andBerserkerBerserker, who had been waiting for a long time. The powerful Berserker overwhelms Saber with brute strength and severely wounds her. Shirou is cut in half while trying to help Saber; seeing this, Illya loses interest and leaves with Berserker. The unconscious Shirou, having been cut in half, is brought back home by Saber and Rin to be cared for. Rin gives the dress Kirei gave her to Saber, who cannot turn into spirit form.
After Shirou and Rin decide to form an alliance, Saber is dissatisfied with their overly conservative strategy and, ignoring Shirou's advice, decides to attack Ryudou Temple alone, where she is wounded by the gatekeeper, Assassin. At Shirou's request, Saber begins to teach him swordsmanship.
Rider unleashes the Blood Fort Andromeda at the school. Shirou uses a Command Spell to summon Saber to drive Rider away, and after searching, they finally find her atop a skyscraper, where Saber releases her Holy Sword to eliminate Rider. However, releasing the Holy Sword consumes most of Saber's magical energy, greatly weakening her and leaving her nearly unconscious. Later, Rin explains to Shirou that Saber knew releasing the Holy Sword might lead to her own disappearance, yet she chose to do so to protect Shirou. Shirou learns Saber's true identity and begins to see her past in his dreams.
Saber learns from Shirou that he is Kiritsugu Emiya's adopted son, and according to Shirou's description, Kiritsugu's personality underwent a massive change after the Fourth Holy Grail War. Saber had maintained the view that "he was a cold and selfish man" ever since Kiritsugu ordered her to destroy the Grail without explanation. However, in the dreams she sees of Shirou, she discovers that Kiritsugu saved a dying Shirou from the fire caused by the Grail and passed on his ideals and way of life to him. She also learns from Taiga Fujimura that Kiritsugu was someone who took a laissez-faire, indifferent attitude toward everything, as if he had given up. Furthermore, Shirou learns of Saber's wish to fight for the Holy Grail through numerous dreams of her past, and he urges her to accept the established facts of her life rather than hoping for a Holy Grail to change her destiny.
Through her daily life with Shirou, Saber realizes that changing her own destiny is trivial compared to Shirou's pure wish, as Shirou pursues his dream even on the brink of death. Finally, the truth is revealed: at the end of the Fourth Holy Grail War, Saber only destroyed the physical form of the Holy Grail, which was its vessel, causing the contents—billions of curses from the world—to spill out.
After Shirou is kidnapped by Illya, Rin and Archer head to the Einzbern Forest to rescue him, with a weakened Saber struggling to follow. Shirou is successfully rescued, but Archer dies while covering their retreat, taking six of Berserker's lives before he falls.
In the Einzbern ForestAfter the first mana transfer, the restored Saber and Shirou together use the projected Caliburn to kill Berserker's remaining seven lives in one strike. Afterward, she begins to show more humanity, acting more like the 15-year-old girl she should be.
On the night of Shirou and Saber's date, Shirou urges Saber to give up the Holy Grail and stay in the modern era, but he is rejected by Saber, who is obsessed with using the Grail to change the fate of Britain's downfall. At this moment, Gilgamesh suddenly intrudes and severely wounds both of them, but Shirou repels Gilgamesh's attack by projecting Avalon. From her initial total lack of understanding and coldness, through the first crushing defeat against Berserker, the direct confrontation with Assassin, the life-risking battle against Rider, the desperate escape from Illya and her Servant, and the life-and-death struggle against Gilgamesh, she comes to understand the dream in Shirou's heart and her own ignorant folly, further awakening her emotions as a human being.
Shirou goes to the church to ask Kirei Kotomine about Gilgamesh's origins, only to discover the dark secrets in the church basement and the truth about Kirei being a cheater; he is subsequently wounded and imprisoned. Saber arrives to save him, and in the church basement, Kirei tells Saber that he will give her the Holy Grail if she kills Shirou. At this moment, Saber makes her final decision. If her affection level isn't high enough, you really will be hacked to death by Saber on the spot.:
| “ | Don't you understand, you lowly person? I am saying that more than such a thing, I want Shirou. If the Holy Grail would defile me, I do not want it. Because everything I want, I already have. | ” |
On the night of the final battle, Saber and Shirou fought fierce battles against Gilgamesh and Kotomine Kirei respectively. Just as both sides were at a loss and being absolutely overwhelmed, Shirou projected Avalon—its name being "The Everdistant Utopia."
With the assistance of this near-absolute isolation barrier, both sides defeated the enemies blocking their path.
Saber accepted Shirou's final Command Spell and used Excalibur to destroy the Holy Grail along with its contents. After the Holy Grail was destroyed, under the departing morning light, Saber expressed her love for Shirou as a human being and then faded away with the wind.

Saber returned to her own era. She finally accepted her established fate and no longer craved the chance to change the past, thereby breaking the contract she had made with the Power of the World.
The King told her last loyal knight, Bedivere, that she had a dream, which was a precious experience. Bedivere's eyes were swollen from crying; he lied and said his mother told him that as long as he closed his eyes, he could see the continuation of the dream. With a weak voice, the King gave Bedivere one last command: go through the forest, cross the blood-stained hills, and throw the holy sword into the lake. After hesitating twice, Bedivere finally completed the command. Under Bedivere's gaze, the King gave one last smile: "I am sorry, Bedivere. I think this sleep of mine will be a little... longer...", and she closed her eyes forever to witness the continuation of that dream. After her death, King Arthur did not return to the cycle of the Throne of Heroes like other Heroic Spirits, but instead went to the Everdistant Utopia, Avalon.
With the death of King Arthur, the Age of Gods on the Isle of Britain ended, and the Age of Man began.
In the "Last Episode" added to Fate/Stay Night (Realta Nua), with the help of the Magus Merlin and through centuries of persistent waiting and searching by both parties, Shirou and Saber were finally reunited in Avalon, fulfilling their respective long-cherished wishes to live together forever, immortal and unchanging.

In the Unlimited Blade Works (hereafter referred to as UBW) route, Saber exists as an important supporting character.
Saber's screen time in this route is not as much as in the Fate route, largely because her story was already well-known from the previous route and didn't need further elaboration. As the title UBW suggests, the main story focuses on the conflict embodied by Shirou and Archer. If the Fate route explores the "Heart of a King vs. the Heart of a Human," centered on Saber gradually understanding the human heart she failed to grasp in life through her time with Shirou and ultimately being saved by him to accept her fate, then the UBW route explores the "meaning of justice," centered on the struggle and interrogation between Archer, who was betrayed by his ideals in the future, and Shirou, who is currently obsessed with those ideals. Saber's Master changes hands several times in this route: first, Caster strips Shirou of his Command Spells, and later Rin signs a new contract with Saber to save Shirou. Although Saber truly becomes an "All-A King" under Rin, she still does not forget Shirou and continues to call him Master until the very end.
After leaving the church, Archer and Saber team up to force Berserker back. Later, Shirou is kidnapped by Caster, and Archer and Saber come to the rescue; however, Saber is held back at the gate of Ryuudou Temple by Assassin. Archer repels Caster but severely wounds Shirou with a backstab. With Assassin's help, Saber brings Shirou back home.
Shirou, Rin, and Saber launch a surprise attack on Kuzuki-sensei and Caster but are suppressed by their powerful close-quarters combat strength. At a critical moment, Shirou awakens his Projection Magecraft, projecting Kanshou and Bakuya to repel Kuzuki-sensei.
On the way back from Shirou and Rin's date, Caster kidnaps Fujimura-sensei, who had gone to the back of Ryuudou Temple to visit Kiritsugu's grave, as a hostage and uses her Noble Phantasm to steal Saber's Master rights from Shirou. Caster issues a Command Spell to Saber to kill Shirou, which Saber barely resists thanks to her exceptionally high Magic Resistance. After the two retreat, Saber is imprisoned and humiliated by Caster in the church. After Shirou and Rin break into the church with Lancer's help, Caster is killed in a surprise attack by the rebellious Archer. Saber, freed from her bonds, contracts with Rin to restore her strength, forcing back Archer who intends to kill Shirou, and finally learns Archer's true identity.
During the duel in the ruins of Einzbern Castle, Saber agrees to Shirou's request to stay on the sidelines without interfering, witnessing Archer being defeated by Shirou as he remembers his own ideals.
In the final battle at Ryuudou Temple, Saber's clash with Assassin, Sasaki Kojirou, is actually a microcosm of Shirou's own struggle. A man given the name Sasaki Kojirou, summoned only because he mastered the secret technique Tsubame Gaeshi; his name, Class, and identity are all fake, yet the Tsubame Gaeshi he achieved through his own efforts is real. Saber's internal recognition of Kojirou is equivalent to her recognition of Shirou.
Ultimately, with the cooperation of Rin's Command Spell, Saber destroys the Holy Grail as she wished. Depending on Saber's affection level determined by previous game choices, the story branches into two endings.
In the True Ending, although Saber does not resolve her own answer, she fades away without regrets after entrusting Rin to watch over Shirou. In the original content of the final episode of the UBW anime, Shirou and Rin, while studying in England, visit King Arthur's tomb in Glastonbury to bid a formal farewell to Saber.
In the Good Ending, Saber remains in the world by relying on Rin's magical energy, continuing to seek the answer to her past path while watching over the future of the two. Since affection level is the condition for whether Saber stays, she may have chosen to stay and help out of concern at the last moment that Shirou might follow the same path as Archer. The anime version adopted the TE, while the GE was completed as a special feature.

| —Saber's regret as she is swallowed by the shadow. | ||
The first three days of the Holy Grail War are exactly the same as in the Fate route, but Saber's act of risking her life to save Shirou does not carry as much weight in Shirou's heart compared to the Fate route, because at this time, Shirou's heart is set on Matou Sakura, whom he had already loved since before the Holy Grail War.
Just after Saber explains the basic elements and purpose of the Holy Grail War, the issue of Illya's connection to the Einzberns surfaces. Saber intends to explain to Shirou the reason for Illya's hostility toward them, but she still suggests that Shirou go to Kotomine Kirei at the church for answers, even though she does not want much contact with that priest. This interaction directly explains the connection between Saber, Emiya Kiritsugu, and the Holy Grail War, as well as the reason for Saber's aversion to Kotomine Kirei.
On the way to the church, Saber tells Shirou not to tell Kirei about the fact that she has been summoned repeatedly.
After Shirou exits the church and hears Kirei's answer regarding the situation, he finds Saber's anxious expression amusing. This leads to the formal establishment of their Master-Servant relationship, but it also shows that Saber's importance is gradually decreasing across the game's three routes.
Shirou and Saber decide to patrol Fuyuki at night and together concoct a story for Taiga and Sakura explaining why Saber is staying at the Emiya residence.
They begin their patrol that night, and Saber keenly senses a Servant draining someone's energy. Upon arriving at the scene, they find Rider and her Master, Shinji Matou, hunting a woman to accumulate magical energy. Saber engages quickly and dispatches Rider with an impatient and effortless attitude, but before they can deal with Shinji, Zouken Matou suddenly appears. Shirou ultimately decides to make peace with Zouken and let him take Shinji back, a decision Saber deeply dislikes because Zouken is non-human. Although she wishes to continue fighting, she has no choice but to help Shirou take the woman to the church for assistance.
While they discuss the mysterious situation and Shirou drafts a blueprint to end the war, Saber responds by saying she will never fail Shirou's trust in her. They continue their patrol the following night, this time targeting Ryudou Temple, where Rin Tohsaka suggested at least one pair of Master and Servant might be. Saber agrees with Shirou's direct assault, but they find nothing at the temple gate except a fading katana. Upon entering the temple, they find Caster standing before a corpse with a grim expression, holding a slender, strangely curved dagger. Before Saber can charge forward in a rage, believing Caster killed her own Master, Shirou stops her because he notices the dagger possesses an unspeakable magical power. However, before he can finish, Saber lunges forward. Caster hurriedly picks up her staff and chants a spell, which is almost ineffective against Saber's Magic Resistance A, and Saber dispatches Caster in short order. After confirming Caster's death, they contact the church to help the injured monks in the temple and return home.
The descriptions of the middle two days focus mostly on Sakura's gradual breakdown and Shirou's daily life and concern for Sakura, while Saber's role is concentrated at night.
On the third night, Saber senses a Servant's presence in the park. Shirou accompanies her, only to find Archer, led by Rin Tohsaka, confronting Zouken Matou. Zouken reveals a hollow shell of Caster, now his puppet, and Saber orders Shirou to step back. Zouken sneers, saying that Servants who can see through this are rare, and that turning Saber into a beastly slave would be far better than a corpse. Both Archer and Saber scoff at Zouken's subsequent theory of Servants as mere tools. Saber faces Caster, while Archer pursues Zouken directly and cleaves him in two. However, Zouken's life force is tenacious, and he quickly crawls away, while something even more terrifying occurs in the park.
A shadow appears in the park, and the black shadow makes everyone present tremble, especially the Servants, who are rendered unable to move. The shadow takes the opportunity to attack Rin Tohsaka, but Shirou pushes her away and has his dark subconscious awakened by the shadow. After escaping from the shadow, Saber carries the unconscious Shirou home, only to be loudly rebuked by Sakura, who questions her origins.
On the final night, Saber and Shirou sense something abnormal at Ryudou Temple and go there to patrol, only to be sniped by True Assassin. Saber begins to engage him, and with the power of her invisible sword, she should have been able to successfully decapitate Assassin. However, by relying on his Protection from Wind, Assassin manages to evade Saber's attacks several times and retreats.
Just as Saber realizes this is a ruse to separate Master and Servant, it is too late; Saber steps onto the black shadow and is ruthlessly swallowed. Assassin tries to seize the opportunity to take Saber's heart by activating his Noble Phantasm "Zabaniya," but his arm is severed by the dying Saber. In her final moments, Saber looks at the night sky, remembering her unfulfilled mission and her failure to meet Shirou's expectations, and can only say "I'm sorry" before being consumed by the shadow. Shirou barely survives after being saved by the suddenly appearing Rider.
Shinji kidnaps Sakura and coerces Shirou into fighting Rider at the school, a battle in which the truth that Sakura is Rider's true Master is revealed. Rider sides with Shirou to protect Sakura.
When Shirou and Rin go to Illya for help, Saber Alter appears and defeats Berserker with successive blasts of her black holy sword. Although Berserker is valiant, he is eventually swallowed and corrupted by the shadow.
However, even after being corrupted, Saber has not completely forgotten Shirou, and her words still hold a lingering affection for him. After Shirou projects Nine Lives to kill Black Berserker, Saber Alter appears again, but she turns and leaves without laying a hand on the Shirou who has lost his strength.
To save the blackened Sakura, Shirou and Rider formed a cooperative relationship. Before the Great Cavern, they faced Black Sakura's final gatekeeper—Saber Alter. Rider and Saber Alter fought a fierce battle. When Rider unleashed her Noble Phantasm "Bellerophon," Saber Alter also unleashed the black Holy Sword, but it was blocked by Shirou projecting "Rho Aias" using Archer's arm. After Rider's Noble Phantasm severely wounded Saber Alter, Shirou finally found an opportunity and, enduring the pain, personally executed Saber Alter with the Azoth Sword. Additionally, in BE38, Shirou failed to get Rider's assistance due to answering a question incorrectly and had to fight Saber Alter alone. The semi-Heroic Spirit Shirou used "Triple-Linked Crane Wings" to defeat Saber Alter. The severely wounded Saber Alter begged Shirou to quickly finish her off as she could continuously regenerate, but Shirou had already died from the backlash of Unlimited Blade Works.
Due to Rin Tohsaka's failed magic experiment, the entire Fuyuki fell into a state of space-time confusion, and all possibilities of the Holy Grail War appeared. The Servants once again felt hostility toward each other. However, most of the content in FHA is still lighthearted and pleasant daily life.
In the scenes with Bazett and Avenger, she played the role of the Saber-class Servant summoned by the Edelfelt sisters during the Third Holy Grail War.
Saber still lives at the Emiya residence, occasionally going out for strolls, playing soccer with children, playing cards with Rin and Sakura, and going to the swimming pool with Shirou. Due to the protection of the Lady of the Lake, she was originally unable to submerge in water and could only walk on its surface, but under Shirou's guidance, she gained the ability to manually toggle this. Later, she raced Shirou in swimming; unable to outswim him but too proud to admit defeat, she kept competing, and Shirou was forced to lose to Saber for 15 rounds without holding back.
In the swimming pool, she rarely changed into a two-pieceswimsuit, and wasLancerenraged by his comment, "A swimsuit of this style should be worn by a more mature woman," chasing and hitting him for a long time.Later, she even threatenedArcherto bury Lancer in the flowerbed of the Fuyuki Church
At night, Shirou took Saber out on patrol. Initially, they were constantly sniped by Archer, who had seen through the truth, but later Shirou used a Command Spell to let Saber jump to Archer's hiding spot and defeat him before he could fire his sixth arrow.
In the final battle of the Reverse Moon of the Heavens, Saber helped Shirou/Avenger reach the Holy Grail and used the Holy Sword to destroy the monsters.
In the hidden scenes, she took a bath together with Shirou.
Secretly observed Illya and Shirou taking a nap, and her whole face turned red after being exposed by Rin.
As a special guest, she commented on the "Wild King" program with Shirou, suggesting that Lancer be fed to Saber Lion, and stated that "since ancient times, kings have always been hungry."
Go toAhnenerbeWorking part-time at the cafe, she impressed everyone, including Rin, with her charm and her lecture on "one can only fight a winning battle on a full stomach." She servedProfessor Nero、Arcueid、Matouthefamily、Berserkerand other guests.GilgameshGilgamesh entered the cafe with a wad of cash to challenge them, demanding Saber serve him. Saber barely endured it under the principle of "the customer is God," serving him with a forced smile. When paying the bill, Gilgamesh demanded to take Saber with him. Unable to take it anymore, Saber pulled out her ahoge and
Participated in the Holy Grail War racing competition with Shirou and drew the Lion-kun coin-operated ride. Because the ride required coins to operate, they were quickly left behind by teams like Rin and Archer. Later, Shirou withdrew all his savings from the bank and frantically fed coins into the ride, catching up with the help of Saber's Riding skill. Finally, as the Saber team, Archer team, and Gilgamesh raced to the finish line, Shirou projected a sword to touch the line first, winning the Holy Grail War.
Shirou andShikiplotted together on how to date all the girls. When putting the plan into practice, Shirou took Saber to a buffet, hoping she would eat her fill there. After eating, Saber went to the movie theater to look for Shirou. In the end, both Shirou and Shiki failed miserably and were confronted by all the girls at the amusement park. At that moment, Sion passed by and completely ignited the powder keg, resulting in Shirou and Shiki being beaten up by a fully unleashed Excalibur and Marble Phantasm, respectively.
Although she is the game's poster girl and has always occupied the center position on various posters and promotional images, the original Saber has never appeared directly in the main story. Artoria appeared in the Fourth Singularity as Lancer Alter, and the one who appeared in the Sixth Singularity was the Lion King—Goddess Rhongomyniad, who only briefly appeared in Bedivere's memories, while the one who appeared in the Sixth Lostbelt was the Fairy of the Inner SeaArtoria Caster。
The setting materials mention that the Saber in FGO is more like a senior protecting her juniors, so the opportunities for her original self to appear were intentionally reduced.
Made a guest appearance as Uesugi Kenshin, under the name Uesugi Artoria.
The character design of Nagao Kagetora (Uesugi Kenshin), who was implemented later, is also a God of War who does not understand human hearts, sharing a similar vibe with Artoria.
Appeared as her original self.
In this parallel world, the Einzbern technology was more advanced than in the main story, capable of directly creating the most excellent homunculi. Therefore, they did not recruit Kiritsugu Emiya as a son-in-law, but instead had Irisviel participate in the war as the Master alongside Saber.
The plot development was roughly the same as Fate/Zero until the duel with Lancer. Due to those who knew the situation of the Holy Grail WarLord El-Melloi IIbringingRitsuka Fujimaruintruded, and the duel ended without a result.
Later, when Irisviel was attacked by the Assassin sent by the Counter Force, she was rescued in time by El-Melloi II. After listening to El-Melloi II's explanation and learning the truth about the corrupted Holy Grail, she formed an alliance with the Chaldea group to destroy the Holy Grail. She realized the truth behind Mash's shield but did not point it out, as she was unsure if Mash herself knew.
In the Great Cavern, Rider and Berserker were eliminated. Combined with the previous Caster, Assassin, and Archer, the souls of five Servants in total allowed the Greater Grail to activate.
After defeating the Black Holy Grail, she and Lancer both departed.
Her original self spent the sports festival hosted by Nero eating while watching the matches. In the final cavalry battle, she rode on Gawain, Tristan, and Lancelot to face off against Nero, who was riding on three Dragon Daughters, mocking Nero for being just a color-swapped derivative character. Finally, both sides unleashed their Noble Phantasms, blowing Chaldea sky-high.
Saber Lily is the leader of the Four Heavenly Kings at the nightclub opened by Merlin, conquering all male customers with her pure charm and making them shower her with QP.
The heroine appearing in The Case Files of Lord El-Melloi IIGrayis the vessel of the King created by the villagers of Blackmore to resurrect King Arthur. The box in her hand, Add, is the tool sealing King Arthur's Holy Spear Rhongomyniad, and its personality comes from Artoria's adoptive brother, Sir Kay. After Saber manifested in the Fourth Holy Grail War, Gray, who originally only slightly resembled King Arthur, underwent rapid physical changes and became identical to the King. When Lord El-Melloi II first met Gray, he was nearly paralyzed with fear because her face was identical to the Saber who had destroyed Rider's chariot during the Holy Grail War. In the final volume, Case: Grand Resolution, as Saber manifested again in the Far East, a lock of Gray's hair turned blonde, and her spirit began to synchronize with the King's.
The Saber of Red appearing in Fate/ApocryphaMordred's dream is to use the Holy Grail to grant herself a chance to challenge the "Sword of Selection."
She makes a guest appearance in Fate/Extella with no main storyline involvement.
Makes a guest appearance in Melty Blood Type Lumina,In the Tsukihime world where Heroic Spirit summoning does not exist, she was summoned to Souya City, defeated Roa, and for fun withArcueidfought a battle.
Because the magical energy "Path" between Artoria and Shirou was not smooth, Shirou was unable to provide her with magical energy (not because Shirou himself lacked magical energy; in fact, according to the official setting book Fate/side material, Shirou has as many as 27 Magic Circuits[12]), so she had to replenish it from food herself. In the Fate route, it is throughsexual intercourseand transferring the Magic Crest toreplenish magical energy.。
But in reality, she truly loves to eat, and claims that "dinner is stored in a separate stomach". However, she possesses a constitution that Sakura is very jealous of, where she never gains weight no matter how much she eats. On Day 12 of the Fate route, after training with Saber, there is an option "Saying we're fasting today," after which Shirou and Illya take turns mocking Saber, resulting in Shirou being beaten to death during training (a fake Bad End, but it does lead to the Tiger Dojo).
While serving as King Arthur in Britain, she once sneaked into thekitchencaught by Merlin's anti-foodie trap, and is therefore very cautious of magus workshops. Among the Knights of the Round Table, the one mainly responsible for the King's meals wasGawainSir Gawain. Gawain is a vegetarian who upholds the philosophy that the quantity of food is more important than the quality, and that one can only win battles on a full stomach; he could only make a single dish: mashed potatoesHowever, potatoes had not yet been introduced to Eurasia at that time, when he cooked, he would crush the potatoes by hand and knead them directly into a mash, piling it as high as a mountain to present to the King. As the Ideal King, Artoria felt that everyone was suffering and she could not make additional demands, nor could she waste food, so she could only eat the mountain of mashed potatoes with a blank expression. After the King took the lead, except for the airheaded Mordred, the others were too embarrassed to refuse; some even thought she didn't understand gourmet food because she could actually finish it all.
Because of similar painful dining experiences in the army, she strongly dislikes the feeling of sitting around a round table in the military cutting large chunks of meat to eat, or eating Gawain's "genius" mashed potatoes. Therefore, Artoria's strictness in judging Shirou's cooking is the highest except for Archer's. This led her to love refined and perfect meals even more; furthermore, her constitution where she never gains weight regardless of how much she eats allows her to drain Shirou's wallet even more shamelessly. She strongly dislikes coarse food like hamburgers, but after blackening, she unexpectedly became a junk food lover. There are two most terrifying things in the world: the first is Sakura with a gloomy face, and the second is Saber's food expenses.。
She likes eating takoyaki, but hates octopus because of the psychological trauma from fighting Caster's giant sea monster during the Fourth Holy Grail War. In FHA, she went berserk after learning that the takoyaki she was eating was actually made from tentacle creatures similar to the sea monster.
The incantation for Merlin's signal flare magecraft is: "Artoria! It's time to eat!"
Artoria's foodie nature is fully exposed in "Fate/hollow ataraxia"; while reading gourmet magazinesher only reading hobby, she loses all ability for rational thought and urges Shirou tothe courtyardremodel into a livestock farm so that she can eat foie gras, ham, and Ise lobster that she hasn't had yet.
Artoria initially refused Caster's request to learn cooking from Shirou, but because the reward was freshly made braised pork withTaiyakiWhen receiving such food, she accepted without hesitation, and the relationship between the two quickly warmed up.
In Carnival Phantasm, Saber's main comedic points are centered around her being a foodie.
True NameArtoria Pendragon(Altria Pendragon, also has other spellings such as Arturia Pendragon and Artoria Pendragon)
In FGOM, it is consistently spelled as Altria.
The following are the frustrated reactions from the community:
Artoria Pendragon is the most widely accepted spelling in the English Fate community. The use of Altria Pendragon as the official spelling in the English version of FGO has drawn dissatisfaction from some veteran players:Explanation of the incident by the English FGO Wikia. Artoria is the feminine form of Artorius, the Latin form of Arthur.[13]。
Her usual personality is serious, rigorous, loyal, and upright. In Fate/Zero, she places more emphasis on chivalry, while in the main series, she is less strict about it and sometimes acts recklessly. She is extremely competitive, unable to tolerate losing or a victory where the opponent held back, putting Shirou and Rin through a lot of trouble. However, she unexpectedly has a childlike side, sleeping with her lion plushie every night and performing "little girl actions" such as "talking to the plushie." When she was first summoned, she was more detached; she didn't feel shy when Shirou saw her naked in the bath, but she began to feel shy later in the Fate route.
Since she cannot dematerialize and it is inconvenient to go out wearing armor, she must wear casual clothes. The blue and white dress she wears in the Fifth Holy Grail War wasKirei Kotominegiven toRin Tohsaka, a set was given every year, which was later passed on to Saber by Rin. Her pajamas are a blue kimono with white flower patterns.
Because she received the blessing of the Lady of the Lake, she can only move on the surface of the water and cannotSwimming, but quickly learned under Shirou's guidanceturn off the passive skilland mastered the technique. With the skill of walking on water, she was able to pursue Lancer, who has top-tier swimming abilities.
In the past, before Saber unified the country, she engaged in a great battle with King Ryons over beards andAhogethe battle of contention. Since that war, the ahoge on Saber's head has become her "reverse scale." If touched casually, one will be thrown six meters away like a javelin. If held, one will be blown away by Invisible Air. If it is pulled out...she will undergo Alterization, though her personality differs from the HF route, and she won't be as cold-blooded as in the HF route.
Rider told Shirou that his summoning of Saber was no coincidence; even without Avalon, Shirou might have summoned Saber due to their similar soul existences. This is also reflected in the ED "Kimi to Ashita" of the 24th episode of the 2006 anime, where the first line of the lyrics is "Our meeting was no coincidence; it must have been a fate decided long ago." Nasu defined Saber as a soulmate who shares the same ideals as Shirou, and in the Carnival Phantasm special, Saber was officially designated as the number one heroine.
In FGO, using Shirou as a vessel,Senji Muramasahas the following dialogue regarding Saber:
"The King of Britain is here, right? You should have a good talk with her. That type of King tends to get stuck in their own head. What? Is it so strange for this old man to worry about her? I can't help but care, after all."
FSN was written first, while the prequel FZ was written later, leading to many differences in settings. Currently, FZ has been officially designated as a parallel world with a similar beginning and concluding ending.
The most typical conflict between the two works is Saber. In FSN, Saber is not so obsessed with chivalry; she highlights her side as a king and a young girl more than a knight, and she would consider tactics like night battles that are looked down upon by chivalry. In contrast, Saber in FZ emphasizes chivalry heavily, and her personality is clearly different from FSN. This has made many Saber fans somewhat dissatisfied. In FSN, Irisviel did not come to Fuyuki, whereas in FZ, Irisviel served as Saber's proxy Master instead of Kiritsugu, who was incompatible with her. Furthermore, in FSN, Saber does not know Illya, while in FZ, Saber has met Illya, making it nonsensical for her not to recognize her. This was corrected in the Ufotable anime, where Saber shows some emotion upon seeing Illya.
In FSN, Kiritsugu does not communicate with Saber because he is a person who can completely exclude emotions and only values efficiency and results, having spoken only three sentences to Saber. However, in FZ, Kiritsugu gave up on communicating with Saber from the start because their personalities and values were incompatible, and he felt angry that Saber took on such a heavy burden as a young girl. Additionally, according to Kotomine, the combination of Kiritsugu and Saber was very strong and won all the way to the end, but in FZ, the two were estranged from beginning to end, each acting on their own.
In the official 10th-anniversary popularity poll, Saber was also divided into FSN Saber and FZ Saber, which means the official side also acknowledged the difference in Saber's personality between the two works.
To some extent, she inherited traits from the Saber of Old Fate, Arthur Pendragon. The elements of King Arthur and the Holy Grail were decided from the beginning, so Saber completely inherited her identity, abilities, and ideals from Proto-Saber.
The plot where Shirou accidentally summons Saber while being pursued by Lancer originates from an almost identical scene in Old Fate, though it lacks the part where the protagonist is killed and then revived.
In Old Fate, Saber was defeated by Archer (Proto-Gil) and then summoned in an Altered state by Berserker's Master, Sancraid Phahn. After Ayaka contracted with Lancer, they purified Saber and defeated the Berserker team alongside Archer.
The President liked this "Alteration" plot point very much, so Saber's Alteration was also implemented in the Heaven's Feel route of the main story.
However, there is a significant difference in personality between Saber and Proto-Saber. The Saber from Old Fate was quite sharp-tongued and became very arrogant after being Altered; these two traits were inherited by Archer and Gilgamesh respectively, making the difference from Artoria quite apparent.
Although FGO's early balance was poor and Servants were too homogenized, as the poster girl, many players naturally spent heavily to roll for her immediately after launch. Saber's skill set was considered decent at the time; although held back by the notoriously useless skill "Instinct" (described as producing a large number of critical stars, but it didn't give many, and she lacked star absorption, making it insufficient), her 3-turn Charisma and the Mana Burst that defined card type buffs were very powerful. However, as time went on, players realized that Saber was not only at the lower end of 5-star Buster AoE Servants but was also almost completely outclassed within the Saber class itself: after using her Noble Phantasm, relying solely on Charisma for normal attacks wasn't enough, and after Merlin's release, the efficiency of attack and Buster buffs was diluted, making her inferior to Altera and Mordred. On the eve of the 3rd Anniversary, Saber's rating on tier lists had hit rock bottom.
It wasn't until the 3rd Anniversary strengthening in 2018 that Saber's Instinct was finally upgraded to "Radiant Path," adding a 30% NP charge function, which, combined with the 20% refund from her NP, achieved a pseudo-50% charge. In the 5th Anniversary strengthening, Saber's second skill Mana Burst was upgraded to "Dragon's Core," which not only added an NP damage buff but also allowed her to turn all her cards into Buster cards for one turn. Combined with the new Buster system brought by the implementation of Koyanskaya of Light and Oberon during the 6th Anniversary, and the fact that she is a non-limited Servant who can be pulled randomly or from many rate-up banners, making it easier to increase her NP level compared to other 50% charge AoE Servants like Muramasa or Ibuki, Saber finally returned to the ranks of top-tier Saber AoE Servants.
Swimsuit Archer does not have the ancestral "idiotic" Instinct; instead, she has Arts buffs, attack buffs, healing, and Territory Creation. Her NP can also drain charge, and her NP gain rate is incredibly high for a 2Q2A deck, coupled with a multi-hit NP. She is widely recognized as one of the best Arts single-target attackers (provided she is NP2, as her healing skill consumes NP). Even before the implementation of the Arts support Altria Caster, she was already able to, within the greatMingFoxsystem, continuously fire her NP.
The first in FGO to achieve the feat of being able to fight a whole Holy Grail War and fill a support list by herself. Saber: Saber, Saber Alter, Lily; Archer: Summer; Lancer: Lancer Artoria, Lancer Artoria Alter; Rider: Summer Alter, Santa Alter; Caster: Castoria; Assassin: Mysterious Heroine X; Berserker: Mysterious Heroine X Alter; Extra: Summer Lion King, Mysterious Heroine XX, Mysterious Idol X.

She is the same Artoria as always, but being at the seaside has relaxed her mood somewhat. Her class representative-like aura remains unchanged, but needless to say, she is much friendlier than usual. いつものアルトリアだが、海辺という事で少しだけ気を緩めている。委員長気質なのは変わらないが、普段より穏やかなのは言うまでもない。 She is the same Artoria as always, but being at the seaside has relaxed her mood somewhat.
