Galgame(Japanese:ギャルゲーム, abbreviated as "ギャルゲー", "GAL", Romanization: gyaru gēmu) is a term for a type of game genre.
Galgame is a common term for games that primarily feature attractive female characters as their selling point. Similar terms include "Bishoujo games," "Moe games," and so on. The counterpart to Galgames isOtome games[1]。
“ギャルゲーム" is aJapanesecompound word, formed by combining "ギャル(gal)" and "ゲーム(game)". "Galgame" is the "ギャルゲーム" English transliteration. In theJapanACG circle, "ギャルゲーム" is usually abbreviated as "ギャルゲー”.
where "ギャル" is the katakana representation of the English loanword "Gal" in Japanese, formed due to the non-standard pronunciation of "Gal" by Japanese people. "Gal" isEnglishslang (synonymous) for the word "Girl" in, the pronunciation is/gæl/, while the Japanese representation of "Girl" isガール. This is a beautiful mistake, but it has now been accepted by everyone.
Another explanation is: "GAL" is composed of the starting letters of three English words: "Girl And Love". The true meaning of "Galgame" is "Bishoujo Love Game" (Girl and Love Game). The origin of this explanation is untraceable, and the claim that GAL is an acronym remains doubtful.
Galgame being translated as "Bishoujo Love Game" is already well-known and accepted, even though Galgames are not all about romance (that is to say, sometimes some puzzle-solving, plot-oriented, or guro visual novel works are also popularly referred to as "Galgame"). InChina, the derived term "domestic Galgame" often covers visual novel works with few romance elements.
In the English-speaking world, because it is considered that there aren't many "Game" elements, these works are generally referred to as "Visual novel" rather than "game". The term Visual novel also includes both 18+ and non-18+ works. Many fans focus on the story of the novel rather than the H-scenes. They believe that many 18+ works can express a complex, realistic, and profound story without taboos.
However, in a strict sense, "Visual novel" in the English-speaking world includes what the Chinese-speaking world refers to as Galgame (focusing on "pretty girls"), Otome games (female-oriented),Adventure games(focusing on plot), etc. So it can also be said that the two are not completely equivalent; it's just that they generally do not use the term "Galgame".
It can also be considered that in daily use, Galgame encompasses everything from those with excellent plotsMasterpiece(神ゲー) to pure erogenukige(抜きゲー), and many other types of works. There are huge differences between them, so this is actually a term with a very wide range of application.

The term "Galgame" first appeared on March 27, 1992, inFamitsu, and was originally created by them to refer toTelenet Japan(日本テレネット)'s game "Valis: The Fantasm Soldier" (夢幻戦士ヴァリス, 1986). Although the official definition of "Valis" at the time was an action game, because the content and plot of this game contained Galgame elements, some views consider "Valis" to be the first Galgame.
However, there are also different viewpoints. Some people believe that Galgames already existed before this work, and "NightLife" released by Koei in 1982 was actually the "first Galgame";VNDBThe earliest recorded work is "Mystery House," produced and released by the American company Sierra Entertainment in 1980 (though as mentioned before, visual novels are not equivalent to Galgames). However, most Galgames of this era had little plot, and many did not adopt the visual novel format.
With the 1994Konamirelease of the male-oriented dating simulation game "Tokimeki Memorial", which became popular with the public, the status of Galgames was formally confirmed. Along with this successful work, Galgames began to spring up like mushrooms. In 1998, Marcus released "Sentimental Graffiti(Baby)", which used a system similar to the former and also achieved success. Galgames more closely resembling their modern form are generally considered to have started with the "Tokimeki Memorial series" and "Shizuku" and other works released near the year 2000.
In the Chinese ACG community, Galgame is often used to refer toエロ游戏(adult games,俗称黄油/黄游)[2],但实际两种用法存在较大差异,这种差异在发源国日本尤为明显。
包含关于性的表述,基于计算机软件伦理机构(ソフ倫) and the Content Soft Association (CSA), and are subject to regulation.
Erogames, as the name suggests, all contain erotic content, and some even include SM plots,グロscenes (R-18G), criminal scenes; furthermore, the player's targets for pursuit are not necessarily beautiful girls; depending on the game, there are also plots where the target is male. Additionally, according to the Ethics Organization of Computer Software (ソフ倫) Article 6 of the regulations, if characters appearing in the game are involved in SM or sexual scenes, they must all be over 18 years old. Therefore, the identities of the targets also change, such as from high school students to university students, and the setting shifts from high school to a university campus (a classic example is0verflowin the settings of the series,Inou Kaguraattended university three times). Or the setting is blurred, not calling them "female high school students" but using the homophonic "female school students" instead. If the target is notStudent, then their occupations are mostly: freelancers,Teacher、Nurse、Waiter、OL、loli("All characters appearing in this work are over 18 years old") and so on. According to the settings, most targets are between 18 and 20 years old.

As a major game category, Galgame can be roughly divided into these categories based on game content (the distinctions between different categories are not strict):
They can also be roughly divided into several types based on the presentation of game content:
With the continuous growth of the Galgame audience outside of Japan, doujin circles or companies in countries and regions outside of Japan have gradually begun to develop and produce Galgames or Galgame-like games in languages other than Japanese. This allows Galgames to be classified by the origin of the developer:

Around a maleorOtokonoko(mostly the protagonist), multiple femaleorOtokonokocharacters hold special feelings for him; in most cases, they shareharemthe same typical attributes as heroines in similar works. It is said that this is to "cater to different user preferences," but in reality, the characters and scenes used in manga adaptations are never more than those in the games.
Most companies have their own stable key artists in charge of character designs, but for projects with particularly strong user demand, famous illustrators or manga artists may be invited to handle the character designs.
Depending on the character designs, many games feature multiple women with different personalities available for pursuit. However, there are also single-route games where only one heroine can be pursued.

Since works in the Galgame industry are usually only released inJapanJapan, some software uses Shift-JIS encoding instead of the internationally standard UTF-8 encoding. This directly causes these Galgames to fail to run or display large amounts of gibberish on Chinese and English systems.
Using locale-switching software such as AppLocale, NTLEA, Locale Emulator (compatible with Win10), ntleas, etc., can resolve some of the gibberish issues.
However, even if the locale switch is successful or the game runs normally without it, non-Japanese players still face Japanese text. In an era when translation groups were scarce, many players used translation softwaremachine-translatedin conjunction with their own brains.mental filling-into force an interpretation of Japanese Galgames. The first popular one was AGTH (which isMeowTranslate), which used Cp2Tran to paste text into translation software to achieve real-time translation. However, since it was a machine, the translated output was often barely intelligible, so unreliable or incomprehensible parts had to be guessed. Later, a new generation of machine translation tools appeared—Visual Novel Reader(VNR for short). Due to VNR's powerful features(it could even translate QQ into Vietnamese)and frequent updates, it gradually replaced AGTH as the mainstream machine translation software. However, VNR now faces a series of problems such as outdated updates, slow startup speed, extremely troublesome configuration, and incompatibility with many operating environments. Therefore, OCR translators led by Dango Translator are replacing VNR; their configuration is relatively simple and the recognition rate is good, making them a viable option. LunaTranslator, which integrates Hook for reading internal game text and OCR functions, is also currently popular. In recent years, AI tools such as ChatGPT and the local large model SakuraLLM have also gradually become major tools for players to assist in understanding and even translating.
During the period from 1995 to 2010, a large number of players developed an interest in learning Japanese or even basic Japanese reading skills through reading Galgame Japanese (for example, the Sais' Translation Method), while others mastered software techniques in the process of debugging translation software. Many of these people becameFansub Groupmembers and anime site webmasters during the five years around 2010, becomingthe Chinese ACG circle...one of the mainstays. The current state of the translation circle has undergone earth-shaking changes; previously, programmers were looking for translators everywhere, but now, programmers are relatively hard to find, and consequently, some "video translations" have also appeared. This fully demonstrates the popularity of the "Universal N1 Plan" among Galgame players. Stop dreaming that translation will be in high demand; go learn programming.
Nowadays, there are also some unofficial, fan translation groups (for example,Translation Group, and in other countries, there are English, Korean, Russian translation groups, etc.) or individual translators (known as "Gehan") who crack, translate, and release Galgames on the internet. Essentially, this is an infringement or even more serious behavior, as it involves modifying the text content of works without the copyright holder's consent, and many Galgames specify they are only for sale and distribution in Japan. However, many official companies turn a blind eye to this, as long as they don't receive reports, the situation doesn't escalate, or it isn't used for commercial profit. In fact, some companies are happy to see their works expand their influence outside Japan, and most players in the community are relatively well-behaved. Although the work of Chinese translation groups is in a gray area, private translation groups have no stable income stipulated by contracts and can only rely on sponsorships or donations from the vast number of players, truly "generating power with love" based on interest. Moreover, for the Chinese Galgame circle where the vast majority of players do not understand Japanese, translation groups are the true pillars that allow players to access many works, so most translation personnel are generally respected within the circle.(Of course, there are also a few translation groups that are "notorious" for certain behaviors; just be careful to avoid them.)。
In recent years, more and more companies have begun to focus on overseas markets, starting to produce or commission agents to produce and release official Chinese and English versions. This has also led to the emergence of a group of companies and firms specializing in official Chinese and English translation and agency distribution, such asHIKARI FIELD、SyawaseWorks(Official Chinese publisher),Sekai Project, NekoNyan (Official English publisher), andShiravune(a Japanese publisher engaged in this business), etc. They mainly onSteamrelease official Chinese and English versions. To avoid being blocked in the China region, facilitate passing Steam reviews, and avoid potential moral conflicts, official Chinese and English versions of Galgames released on Steam mostly adopt the model of an all-ages version plus a separately released patch. Official Chinese translation has also become one of the main ways for translation personnel to "earn a legal living."
Except for a few exclusive titles, PC has always been the primary platform of choice for most game developers. This is partly due to the hassles of consoles and handhelds in terms of technology, updates, and platform censorship, and also because basically all console and handheld platforms require games released on them to be all-ages titles.
However, the high ownership of consoles and handhelds in Japan, along with the rise of mobile platforms in recent years, has attracted the attention of some game developers. There are more and more console, handheld, and mobile versions of Galgames, leading to the emergence of companies specializing in porting and publishing for other platforms, such asGIGA's parent company Entergram has expanded its porting and publishing business in recent years. However, relatively speaking, official ports have always been in the minority.
Therefore, a cross-platform engine is particularly important—both for developers and porters.
Galgame Emulatorsis a general term for a series of emulators used to simulate and run Galgames on non-native platforms, with the aim of allowingthose without computersotaku to enjoy the fun of Galgames anytime and anywhere. Most of them use ONS emulators or Kirikiroid2 emulators to run PC games on mobile phones.
One exception isDoki Doki Literature Club!(DDLC) and other games based on Ren'Py have engine architectures that are inherently cross-platform (because they use Python source code compatible with both computers and mobile phones as the engine), so Android ports can be easily made through packaging. However, regarding DDLC specifically, although the official channel later released an Android version, game producer Dan Salvato personally warned players not to play DDLC on mobile phones because DDLC's own characteristics (changing the game's direction through file deletion) prevent the most complete gaming experience from being achieved outside of the PC. Released on July 1, 2021,Doki Doki Literature Club Plus!solved the cross-platform issue by using a built-in virtual machine and was released onXbox One、Xbox Series X/S、PlayStation 4、PlayStation 5andNintendo Switchplatforms.
In Japan, there are mainlyBishoujo Game AwardsandMoe Game Awardtwo major, widely recognized awards for evaluating Galgames released each year. The Elite Galgame awards, held annually by the Baidu Galgame Tieba, is a voting and evaluation event with high participation and recognition within the Chinese Galgame community for new Japanese Galgame releases and translated works over the years. The domestic Galgame community also organizes some annual voting and evaluation events. In the West (primarily in the English-speaking community), there have also beenInternational Saimoe LeagueVisual Novel performance competitions (though as mentioned before, Visual Novels are not equivalent to Galgames).
The Galgame community also has various rating websites of different sizes, among which ratings from some widely-used and recognized websites can serve as a reference for work quality and reputation, such as Hihyou Kuukan (Japan),VNDB(English),Bangumi(Chinese).
As Galgame sales channels become increasingly diverse, and accurate sales figures for some platforms are difficult for outsiders to obtain (for example,Steam), the exact sales of some games may be hard to determine or can only rely on estimates or official announcements. For example,YUZU SOFTannounced on February 25, 2026 that "Senren * Banka"'s total sales across all platforms have reached 1 million.
The following lists Getchu's annualnew releasesales top twenty[5], where only the highest-ranking version of the same work released in the same year (such as first-press edition, regular edition, bonus edition, deluxe limited edition...) is taken (so it may differ from the original list).
