BMS(full name Be-Music Source or Be-Music Script)[2]is a type ofrhythm gamechart file format. In some contexts, this term can also refer to music, charts, and related community events created using this format.
BMS is a type ofrhythm gamechart file format used to record music and chart layout information.
BMS was originally designed by Urao Yane in 1998 for use as chart files in theBeatmaniasimulator he developed. As the simulator gained popularity, many rhythm game composers began using BMS for music and chart creation. Songs and charts created in this way are called "BMS songs" and "BMS charts."
As the number of BMS songs grew, BMS creators and players began interacting on online forums, and some BMS creators started organizing communities, hosting song submission events and BMS competitions. These BMS-related community activities are collectively known as "BMS events."
It should be noted that although BMS originated from and has close ties with the rhythm game community, conceptually speaking,BMS is neither a rhythm game nor a rhythm game simulator, but should be understood as an independent creative format for music and charts.
The creation and development of the BMS format is closely tied to its original purpose as a "rhythm game chart simulator." Only key development milestones are briefly recorded here.[3]
At this point, the basic BMS format standard, aside from some minor subsequent changes, had largely been finalized and became the standard format used by most BMS creators.
The BMS file format, in addition to serving as a chart file format, can also be understood as a music creation format that "arranges and combines various keysounds and samples to form music."
The compressed packages accompanying BMS charts often contain a large number of keysound files such as instruments, drum hits, and vocal samples (commonly with .wav and .ogg file extensions). The BMS chart files themselves (including .bms, .bme, .bml, .pms, .bmson, etc.) specify in text form how to arrange these keysounds to form the corresponding music.
Based on the same music, each BMS chart specifies which keysounds appear in the chart; the remaining keysounds appear only as background sounds. Simple BMS charts place only a few notes in the chart; difficult BMS charts place most of the samples into the chart. Generally, each track in the chart corresponds to a specific instrument, sample, or drum type, giving players the experience of "playing an instrument with each key press." Through this approach, BMS achieves an organic combination of music and gameplay charts.
In addition to official charts ("bundled charts") made by the author or their team, players can also create additional charts for existing BMS songs; these are called "differential charts." To facilitate player-made charts, some BMS authors provide a blank file containing only the music keysound arrangement. These files are generally labeled with special names (blank, white, etc.) or use special file extensions such as ._bms, .sabun[5], or .bmssss.
The act of converting existing non-BMS music into BMS charts is called "BMS-ification." As mentioned above, BMS-ification is not simply creating rhythm game charts; it fundamentally requires reproducing the original music using keysound samples.Additionally, BMS-ifying someone else's music constitutes derivative work and generally requires permission from the corresponding composer or relevant copyright holder.
Some BMS charts include Background Images (BGI) or Background Animations (BGA) that can be displayed/played in sync with the chart.
The following content is based on the standard 7-key + 1 turntable BMS chart; other chart types (such as PMS) may differ somewhat.
Note Types: There are two different types of notes in BMS charts:
Judgment Types: BMS chart judgment types follow the five judgment categories from the Beatmania series:
The error margins for each judgment type depend on the chart's preset judgment difficulty level (JUDGERANK) and the simulator being used. Below are examples from two common simulators: (- means the key press is earlier than the note, + means the key press is later than the note)[8]

Chart Gauge: When playing BMS charts, players can select different gauge types based on their desired challenge level.[9]During gameplay, the gauge is displayed on screen. The common gauge types, from easiest to hardest, are as follows:
Additionally, in the dan (grade) mode of each simulator, gauge mechanics differ from normal play. The following gauge types exist:
Additionally, under survival-type gauges, when the player's gauge drops below a certain percentage, HP loss is somewhat reduced, commonly known as "correction."[11]
Result Score: BMS chart results are divided into three parts: Score (EX SCORE), Score Grade (GRADE), and Clear Status (CLEAR TYPE).
The difficulty of BMS charts is expressed through difficulty names and difficulty values.
Chart Simulation: Software capable of playing or running BMS charts is collectively referred to asBMS chart simulators/players(BMS Simulator/Player)。
Chart Gameplay: Playing BMS charts requires players to follow the rhythm and tap along using some form of input. Since BMS charts have many falling tracks, they are not suitable for touchscreen play, and players generally use the following methods:[25]
Since BMS charts have many key lanes, they pose a significant challenge to players' chart reading and finger coordination. Growing from a beginner to an expert generally takes a long adaptation period, but this also attracts many players who enjoy challenging themselves to join the community.
Starting from 1999, a group of composers who primarily used BMS as their chart-writing format emerged in the rhythm game community. At the same time, a series of BMS events were held to encourage composers to submit BMS songs and charts. BMS songs from these events have also made their way into numerous rhythm games, becoming a major source of rhythm game tracks.
BMS events are generally divided into two categories: competitive and submission-based. Competitive BMS events invite players to rate songs and charts, ranking all submitted songs by score. Submission-based BMS events also have rating and comment systems but do not calculate rankings. Regardless of the category, after the event concludes, organizers generally compile the submitted BMS songs into packs for players to download and play.
This section records BMS-related events and BMS songs featured in rhythm games. To avoid excessive length, only events with 3 or more songs featured in rhythm games will be described individually; the remaining songs will be recorded in a unified table at the end.
THE BMS OF FIGHTERS (abbreviated BOF) is an annual BMS event (except 2007) organized by AOiRO_Manbow since 2004, and the largest BMS event.
PArty Be-music ArT! (abbreviated PABAT!) is a BMS event organized by Korean players since 2007. It has been held annually since 2010.
An event held in 2007 as a replacement for that year's THE BMS OF FIGHTERS.
