Originally a simple derogatory term, after the rise of otaku and manga culture, the meaning began to shift. In ACG discussions, the meaning has leaned more towards describing the ACG culture's "(Facing older individuals) young females who always maintain an arrogant, cocky, contemptuous, or teasing attitude" typical stereotypical characters. This "arrogance" may stem from a young person's desire for recognition from their elders, representing a manifestation of adolescent rebellion.
As a typical plot element, much like the TV series "Justice Bao" or "Mito Komon," villains are always taught a lesson after doing evil. In typical works related to the Mesugaki theme, such segments are usually arranged in the plot: being cocky and looking down on others → being taught a lesson by the person they looked down on → softening up.
Once a Mesugaki is "taught a lesson," they often soften up easily. After softening, they can no longer maintain their former cocky and arrogant image. Breaking through the "brat" outer shell and returning to their true nature, showing behavior appropriate for their age, this contrast is one of the charms of a Mesugaki. In certain contexts. It also seems to combine with the act of teaching a lesson to "Brat" this rare real-world aspiration.
The image of a Mesugaki:
Due to their arrogant exterior and the revelation of their age-appropriate nature after being "disciplined," they manifest the "tsun" and "dere" process to a certain extent, sharing similarities with the tsundere archetype. Therefore, there are many characters whose attributes overlap as both "Mesugaki" and "Tsundere." However, strictly speaking, the two are not entirely the same.
Since both "Little Devils" and "Mesugaki" enjoy teasing people, many people confuse the two, but in reality, there are differences between them.
"Make You Understand (Japanese:わからせ)" is a term derived from Mesugaki-themed works. As mentioned above, generally, Mesugaki-themed works will feature a character responsible for "correction."
Thus, the character in this role is also referred to as the "Make-You-Understand type (Japanese:わからせ系)", which carries metaphors such as "showing you how tough adults are," "letting you know the difference in life experience," "teaching you the ways of society," and so on.
Since the "lesson" is usually delivered through "rich life experience," and influenced by the target audience and gendered etymology, this role is mostly filled by older men, typically middle-agedUncleand other stereotypical figures.
