(Haibara Ai)
| “ | Humans cannot reverse time. If they try to twist it, they will be punished. | ” |
Ai HaibaraIt is a manga《Detective Conan》and its derivative works. Originally a scientist for the villainous organizationthe Black OrganizationscientistShiho Miyano, after her body shrank, she took the alias Ai Haibara and becameDetective Boys's member.
Ai Haibara, whose real name is Shiho Miyano, is of Japanese-BritishMixed-racedescent, her father is the man known as the "Mad Scientist Exiled from the Scientific Community,"Atsushi Miyano(Atsushi Miyano), and her mother is the woman known as the "Hell Angel,"Elena Miyano(Elena Miyano), both of whom werethe Black Organizationscientists within the organization who died shortly after she was born. She went to study in the United States under the organization's orders(The original work does not mention her educational background or school; the Harvard PhD is purely fanon. Given the situation of American universities, it is more likely not a formal degree education, but rather a College course related to biopharmaceuticals), returned to Japan at age 13, took over her parents' research, and became a scientist within the organization with the codename Sherry. TheShinichi KudoshrinkingConan Edogawamysterious drug APTX4869 was developed by her, and she was the one who changed Shinichi Kudo's drug test result from "Unknown" to "Dead," causing the Black Organization to temporarily stop searching for him. Because her only relative, her older sisterAkemi Miyano(Akemi Miyano, alias Masami Hirota) was murdered by organization member Gin in the 10-billion-yen robbery case, she stopped her drug research in protest; while being held awaiting the organization's disposal, she swallowed a hidden APTX4869 to commit suicide, but luckily shrank and managed to escape.
After escaping the organization, Shiho Miyano, while searching for the one who had the same experience,Shinichi Kudocollapsed in front of his house, was rescued and taken in by Professor Agasa, and stayed at his home. Professor Agasa gave her the alias "Ai Haibara" (using the character for 'love'), but she insisted on using the homophonous "Ai" (meaning 'sorrow') instead. From then on, she used the name Ai Haibara and enrolled in Class 1-B of Teitan Elementary School, where Conan is, becoming a member of the Detective Boys while also researching the antidote.
Calm and rational, with a strong sense of planning, she describes herself as the "sharks," that everyone hates, unlikeRan Mouri'sis a "Dolphin" who is liked just as much. Because of her tragic experiences in the Organization, she once developed a pessimistic outlook on life, willing to trust only herself, and thus did not form a healthy worldview like her sister Akemi. She has a side that does not hesitate to use any means to achieve her goals, for exampledecisively firing a gun to intimidate kidnappers when held hostage, suggesting causing an accident to collect DNA, and setting a fire to help a classmate delay an open class[citation needed]。
She spends most of her time in the basement of the Professor's house developing an antidote for APTX4869 with him or conducting other pharmaceutical research. She also participates in activities with the Detective Boys, serving as their guardian, and is another reassuring presence besides ConanConan the Dad, Ai the Mom. She is close to Ayumi, and her relationship with the Professor is like that of a father and daughter, often worrying about his weight. She does not lack passion; she can play soccer, occasionally fakes crying or scares Conan as a joke, and sometimes takes her bad mood out on those around her. She also loves women's fashion items. At the same time, she worried that the Organization's pursuit of her would involve those around her and hoped to escape through her own death, but was stopped several times by Conan and the Detective Boys. Later, as time passed, she became increasingly positive and confident, no longer seeking death, but she still fears the Organization and is unwilling to reveal too much about it even to Conan, whom she trusts most.
Haibara Ai is one of the few people who knows that Conan is Shinichi. She provides assistance to Conan at critical moments and has helped him hide his true identity from a suspicious Ran many times. She shares a comrade-in-arms' tacit understanding with Conan, knowing exactly what he needs at the right time. She is often assigned by Conan to look up information or perform tests, and in turn, she frequently teases him; she once asked Conan for a designer bag when he requested her to fake an illness.
Author Gosho Aoyama has personally confirmed that Ai knows the true identity of the Boss and the name of the Organization. In 2021, Aoyama announced that the Organization's Boss is Renya Karasuma.
The character "Hai" (灰) comes from "Gray" in the name of female detective Cordelia Gray. The character "Ai" (哀) comes from the "I" in the name of female detective V.I. Warshawski ("I" is homophonous with "Ai"). Originally, the Professor wanted to name her "Ai (あい)", but she herself changed it to "Ai (あい).
Haibara Ai's English localized name, "Anita Hailey," comes from the famous American mystery writer Anna Katharine Green,
Later, the author Gosho Aoyama stated in an interview that "Ai" actually comes fromIrene Adlerthe "I" in (Irene Adler, the only woman to have defeated Sherlock Holmes).[7]
Her real name, Shiho Miyano, was confirmed to be taken from the name of one of Gosho Aoyama's online friends, and shares the same surname as the Japanese female mystery novelist Murako Miyano.
She is proficient in pharmacology and excels in shooting, anatomy, medicine, and other fields. She is fluent in English and possesses a certain level of reasoning ability. In her adult form, she can split a thick iron chain with an axe, and she has strong endurance and pain tolerance. The original work does not mention her driving skills, but in the TV special "The Disappearance of Conan Edogawa," there are scenes of Ai Haibara skillfully driving a car. However, she later overturned the vehicle because her small body prevented her from controlling it accurately. In the movie special "Lupin III vs. Detective Conan," with theFujiko Mine'sassistance, she skillfully drove a Harley-Davidson motorcycle to chase a plane; she mentioned that she used to drive a Harley while in the Organization.
Her favorite color is a deep red like a rose, and she loves drinkingcoffee., likes eating sandwiches made with blueberry jam and peanut butter, and likes small animals (Little Dog、Little Catetc.), and reads women's fashion magazines. She hates bugs and snakes, and once stayed up until 4 AM just to eliminate a cockroach that appeared in her room.
As a mixed-race girl with 3/4 Japanese and 1/4 British ancestry, she is very attractive, with slightly wavy flaxen hair and a complexion paler than the average Japanese person. Her appearance resembles a certain mixed-race child star from the United States, which has drawn the attention of talent scouts.
When she first appeared, her personality was cold, but over time, through the influence of the Detective Boys and the weakening of the threat from the Organization(After the Mystery Train incident, except forVermouth, the members of the Organization generally believe that this little girl is dead, and Vermouth has also currently given up her pursuit of her), her cheerful, sunny, and girlish side has gradually been revealed.
She is a fan of Big Osaka's forwardRyusuke Higo's ultimate fangirl. Because she empathized with Higo's experience of transferring teams, she became a fan and even started playing soccer herself. After learning aboutRyusuke HigoandYoko Okino's scandal, she froze on the spot and formed an investigation alliance withKogoro Moriformed an investigation alliance, after which the misunderstanding was cleared and she wasRyusuke Higogiven a "head pat," her maidenly heart overflowed; theRyusuke Higopersonally touchedRyusuke Higosmall plushie was lost, she sat slumped on the floor of the Professor's house in a daze for several hours.Hiroshi Agasacommented, "It's only at times like this that I'm reminded she really is an 18-year-old girl";Shuichi Akaistated, "This way, it's easier for me to protect her better". (In the original work, within the short span of eighty chapters between the Kite Flying Competition Arc and the School Trip Arc, Haibara Ai's obsession with her idol suddenly reached a frantic level, to the point where some readers believe her characterization suffered a serious breakdown during this stage, which remains controversial to this day.)
She comes with a built-in "Organization Member Radar"; whenever an Organization member or a suspected member is nearby, she becomes terrified. Currently, there is no scientific explanation or official clarification for this ability. However, it seems one of the factors that triggers this radar is the level of attention the person pays to Haibara AiExcept forRum, and Haibara cannot actually distinguish the direction of the threat... Although many people criticize its lack of rigor, many plot analysis fans actually cite Haibara's radar as a reference when speculating about main storyline characters.
By the way, this young girl often delivers a deadpan (and cute) finishing blow, which is one of the character's major "moe" points. Known victims includeKogoro Mori、Conan Edogawa、Hiroshi Agasaand others. What's worse is that the lethality of these finishing blows lies in the fact that after being "stabbed," the victim is left powerless to fight back...
In the original work, Shiho Miyano's bust is very shapely. In the "Lupin III vs. Detective Conan" movie, Haibara wasFujiko Mine'sasked, "Did your chest shrink too? Or were you always like that?" and reflexively retorted, "Think about it, that's impossible, right? I was actually quite well-endowed..."

She officially debuts as a transfer student in Class 1-B of Teitan Elementary School. The Junior Detective League happens to receive a request from their classmate Toshiya to help find his missing older brother. Conan deduces that Toshiya's brother was kidnapped to forge counterfeit bills. Toshiya mentions having witnessed a woman dressed entirely in black, which piques Conan's interest.Organization PTSD. After some searching, the Junior Detective League recklessly breaks into the criminals' hideout and is caught by the kidnappers' accomplices, who are forcing Toshiya's brother to continue making counterfeit bills. Conan almost fails to subdue the criminals, but at the critical moment, Ai Haibara picks up a handgun and fires a shot at the kidnapper. On the way home, Ai Haibara exposes Conan's identity and reveals her own—as "Sherry," a member of the Black Organization and the developer of APTX 4869. A terrified Conan worries about Professor Agasa's safety, but it turns out to be a false alarm. Haibara, unwilling to work for the Black Organization due to her dissatisfaction with human experimentation and her sister's murder, took the drug and escaped, collapsing in front of the Kudo residence on a rainy night, where she was found and taken home by Professor Agasa. During their conversation, Haibara reveals that her sister was her only remaining relative. She remembers that due to a mistake, she had sent the drug's data back to her sister disguised as a travel tape, and it is likely with her sister's teacher, Masami Hirota. However, by the time they arrive, Professor Hirota has already been murdered. The culprit is Akira Shirakura (cvTakehito Koyasu)。
The Junior Detective League goes to the stadium to watch a soccer match. Haibara hides in the crowd wearing sunglasses, worried that her face might be caught on TV and discovered by the Organization. Conan lends her his hat so she can watch the game. Ai Haibara thinks to herself:Kudo-kun, you wouldn't even dream that you've already become inextricably linked to a project our Organization started half a century ago. While the Junior Detective League is fooling around, they get caught up in a blackmail incident at the stadium.
Gin and Vodka are drinking in a bar, where Gin exposes the true identity of a waiter, who is actually Vermouth. During their conversation, they mention that Vermouth is looking for something. While the Detective Boys are on a bus, Ai Haibara mentions that shecan tell just by the smell, as people from the Organization all have a repulsive scent, while also mentioning that during her previous encounter with the Black Organization, she felt the presence of another member. At this moment, Jodie-sensei, Dr. Araide, and a passerbyShuichi Akaiboard the bus one after another, and Ai Haibara suddenly becomes inexplicably terrified.Radar takes effectThey happened to encounter a group of hijackers seizing a bus. With the cooperation of the Detective Boys and the police, the hijackers were subdued. However, because the hijackers had set a bomb, as it was about to explode, Ai Haibara showed suicidal thoughts, wishing to turn to ashes with the bus. Conan broke the glass and forcibly pulled Haibara out of the vehicle. Conan said to Haibara: "Don't run away, Haibara. This is your destiny. Running away won't help.”

Ai Haibara herself is a tsundere who says the opposite of what she feels. Additionally, after the Full Moon arc, the author cut out a large amount of internal psychological descriptions of the characters, causing Haibara's emotional threads to become blurred. Only the more important relationships will be discussed here.
Towards Conan/Shinichi's feelings
Although not explicitly expressed, the person she cares about in her heart isConan Edogawa。illnesswhen she once dreamed of a scene where Conan saved her and promised to protect her.
In the "Desperate Revival" arc of the original work, Ai Haibara's toy gun fired 7 roses, which in the language of flowers means "secretly loving you."[33]After the Desperate Revival arc, she smiled in the car upon learning that Conan didn't have time to confess to Ran. Haibara also once secretly used Conan's phone to delete a swimsuit photo of Ran that Sonoko had sent to Shinichi.
Yukiko KudoYukiko also teased Conan that Haibara had feelings for him, while Haibara herself claimed to the outside world that she was only interested in her test subject. In fact, Conan thought so too, so he was very surprised to hear his mother say that, and he tried to probe Ai Haibara that night but to no avail.[34]。Yukiko: "If a girl keeps looking at a boy, it's either because there's something on his face, or she likes him." As a result, before bed that night, Conan asked Haibara: "Is there something on my face?", only to be met with a cold stare from Haibara.
In OVA 12 "The Miracle of Excalibur," her affection for Conan is quite evident.
In the movie "Captured in Her Eyes," she made a joking confession.
In the movie "Sunflowers of Inferno," an elderly lady noticed that Ai had someone she liked and encouraged her not to give up.
In the movie "The Crimson Love Letter," a metaphorical karuta card appears, which can be translated as "My life, if it must end, let it end now; for if I live on, my hidden love will surely be revealed."
In the special "The Disappearance of Conan Edogawa," Ai blushed inexplicably at Conan once.
The above are all relatively clear instances showing Haibara Ai's one-sided feelings for Conan, and do not include all interactions between Conan and Haibara Ai.Because there are too many examples to list them all.. Since the feelings between Conan/Ai and Shinichi/Ran have unavoidable mutually exclusive parts conceptually, many Conan discussion forums avoid talking about it, and discussion areas are mostly divided by preference; please judge for yourself.
Gosho Aoyama has hinted more than once that Haibara likes Conan, such as in fan mail replies, various interviews, and SDBs (for example, he once said in a fan Q&A that Sera and Haibara Ai like the same person). Furthermore, in the official DVD/BD bonus for the movie "Black Iron Submarine," Gosho explicitly wrote in the included illustrated note that the person Haibara Ai likes is Conan.
Feelings toward Ran
Because of her feelings for Conan, Haibara Ai has always harbored feelings of jealousy and competitiveness toward Ran.
The original work does not explicitly state when Haibara Ai became aware of Ran's existence.Nor does it clarify when she fell in love with Shinichi., but Ran appeared in the news photo she recalled in Volume 18, where she first debuted. Ran learned of Haibara Ai's existence after the Blue Castle incident, hearing from Ayumi that Haibara Ai was a new transfer student living at the Professor's house, by which time it had been a while since Haibara Ai's debut.
When she first officially met Ran, she did not respond to her greeting, thinking to herself, "Am I running away?" Although there is no explicit explanation of what this "running away" refers to, later when the Professor took the Detective Boys camping and everyone was happily singingOP1lyrics, Conan suddenly mentioned Ran, causing Haibara Ai to cast a complex look at him, which she immediately withdrew after Conan noticed.[35]
During her first close contact with Ran, she lived at the agency under the false identity of Edogawa Conan, but Ran did not notice anything unusual; she finally appeared at the restaurant where Shinichi and Ran were on a date and ended the identity swap, and when Shinichi saw Ran again, he had turned back into Conan. Detailed in the Desperate Revival arc (Manga Vol. 26).
Haibara Ai has made two comments regarding the relationship between Shinichi, Ran, and herself: "a clean scent" and "a flower in a storm," but she could see that the snacks Ran made contained her own forced feelings. Detailed in the Bloody Valentine arc.
Her first formal interaction with Ran was in the daily case "The Mystery in the Net"[36], where Ran was the first to discover her when she suffered from heatstroke at the beach, which surprised both the Professor and Conan. She metaphorically compared herself to an unpopular shark and Ran to a beloved dolphin, but Conan and the Professor did not understand what she was saying. At the end, she thought of Ran's words about courage, which was exactly what she had been lacking[37], so she took the initiative to shake hands with Ran and introduce herselfIn the guidebook, this part implies a unilateral declaration of war from Ai to Ran. Ayumi revealed to Ran that Conan and Ai had once discussed Ran's figure being the "childbearing type" while chatting, which made Ran very embarrassedCommenting on others' figures is a very impolite thing to do. And Ran is no fool; she had already sensed Ai's inexplicable hostility, but she continued to show kindness, hoping that Ai would one day open her heart.
In the Vermouth arc (Manga Vol. 41-42)Ran Mouri'scame to visit the sick Haibara Ai and cooked egg porridge for her, and Haibara, out of her...Dolphin” due to her resistance, her desire not to involve more unrelated people, and her psychologically conflicted emotional reasons, she pretended to sleep, while Ran tactfully left after finishing everything. Conan temporarily left the agency and stayed at the Professor's house under the pretext of "having the responsibility to take care of Haibara Ai since he caused her cold," to which Ran commented that she felt "a little bit jealous"This segment was deleted in the anime.。
When Ran and Sonoko were gathering at Jodie's house, they caught a glimpse of the hidden photos. Subsequently, in theFull Moon Arc, Ran Mouri, out of worry and doubt about those photos, hid in the trunk of Jodie's car and arrived at the scene of the incident (having called the police beforehand). When Haibara Ai appeared and made a "life-for-life" deal with Vermouth, Ran left her hiding place and lunged toward Haibara Ai to protect her; in Ran's arms, Haibara thought of her sister. Afterward, Jodie, Akai, and others launched a counterattack against Vermouth. By the time Vermouth left, both Ran and Ai had lost consciousness.(However, due to Aoyama's mysterious setting, Conan still doesn't know about this to this day, as neither Ai nor Ran told him. There is a bug in this plot: in a conversation with the Professor after the Full Moon Arc, Conan proactively mentioned that "it seems Akai Shuichi saved Haibara at that time,"[38], but since Conan, Ran, and Haibara all lost consciousness during the incident, Conan could only have learned this information when talking to Jodie to coordinate their stories afterward, yet Jodie has no reason to avoid mentioning Ran's involvement. Even Sonoko knows Ran was involved; it is very strange that everyone is keeping this from Conan. In a 2014 New Year's card reply to a reader, Aoyama mentioned this but only brushed it off.)。
During the incident involving the attempted sniping of Diet member Domon Kouri, Haibara and the Professor tried to keep Ran and Kogoro at the Professor's house to prevent them from falling into danger. When Ran prepared to leave early, Haibara Ai spoke to her very nervously and once again recalled her sister, though this was also the last time she associated Ran's image with Akemi's.[39]It cannot be ruled out that this was a red herring regarding the main plot. During this period, Akai Shuichi became a core character of the main storyline, and after the revelation of his relationship with Miyano Akemi, the author never mentioned the similarity between Ran and Akemi again, although before that, both Haibara Ai and Akai Shuichi had several plot hints suggesting this.)。
In the Bell Tree Express Arc, Haibara Ai grabbed the[40]
Unlike her frequent suspicions that Conan is Shinichi, Ran has no suspicion (at least none clearly expressed) that Haibara Ai might be someone else or an adult who has shrunk; she treats Haibara as a somewhat mature child and provides the care of an older sister toward a junior. Furthermore, due to Conan's usual behavior and excuses, after Ran dismissed her suspicions about Conan, she believed he had feelings for Ai.
Haibara Ai's attitude toward Ran has changed, from avoidance and coldness at the beginning, to a willingness to interact and communicate in the middle stage, and now she can naturally get along with her as a child. Haibara Ai does not want Ran to get involved in the Black Organization incidents and has always cared about her; she can also perceive some of Ran's feelings and strengths that even Shinichi has never noticed, and at times her insight into Ran's thoughts is more accurate than Conan's. For example, Haibara Ai once told Conan that Ran is stronger than he imagines, but Conan cluelessly replied, "Ran is strong in Karate, right?", causing Ai to give him a half-moon eye look.[41]
Although some readers believe that Haibara Ai sees Ran as her sister Akemi, the manga does not explicitly describe this. In Manga Files 1070-1072, Haibara Ai's affection for Akemi is shown to be more natural and intense.
It is currently unclear whether Haibara gave up her feelings for Conan for Ran's sake; Haibara's attitude toward the relationship between Shinichi and Ran is quite subtle. She does not proactively provide the antidote and often criticizes Conan for transforming for the sake of romance regardless of the consequences, though she also frequently and openly teases Conan about him and Ran.
Hiroshi Agasa
Haibara Ai and Professor Agasa are like family; Haibara usually takes care of the Professor and the household like a housekeeper, occasionally criticizing the Professor's strange inventions. She doesn't act spoiled or willful like a typical daughter, but the Professor is someone she deeply cares about and values, and her usual strictness is for the sake of his health. In the Desperate Revival series, she once told Conan that if the Black Organization used the Professor's life as a bargaining chip, she would choose to sacrifice others in exchange. In the Vermouth arc, when she woke up in the middle of the night, she panicked because the Professor had knocked over tomato juice that looked like blood, and she becomes very anxious whenever the Professor might be in danger.
Ryusuke Higo
Once empathized with Higo's situation, and after seeing Higo's spirited comeback, she became a fan of Higo and is quite obsessed, thus starting to follow Yoko Okino as wellHowever, when a rumored scandal between Higo and Yoko broke out, she was so angry that she deleted all of Yoko's songs, and greatly admires Higo(limited only to admiration)。
Regarding the so-called conflict between Gosho Aoyama and the animation/movie production teams
【Non-manga works such as movies, the anime series, OVAs, and special episodes may have certain discrepancies compared to the original manga plot. Character designs and storylines are modified according to different directors and screenwriters, with both additions and subtractions. Gosho Aoyama and the production team have both admitted many times that Aoyama's involvement in the movies is extremely high; he discusses scripts and storyboards in meetings, sometimes provides original drawings himself, corrects lines, and even forces the director to include his ideas in the script (such as the fight between Akai and Amuro in M20). Therefore, the claim that "Aoyama is completely unaware of the movie plots and directors can arbitrarily add personal content without permission" is purely a rumor that cannot withstand scrutiny.(Rather, the claim that the original author has no authority over the movies is inherently unreasonable, yet this rumor is widespread). Especially since the movies have a larger audience, the Haibara Ai/CoAi plot points often cause dissatisfaction among some extreme fans, but Aoyama has never denied or opposed these plots. For example: Gosho Aoyama was involved in Haibara Ai's scenes in movies M19 and M24.[42][43], regarding the part in M4, 73 stated that he personally didn't have that intention, but in the end, he didn't choose to delete it; instead, everyone came up with an idea together to wrap it up.[44]The Haibara Ai-related plot in M26 was also created by Aoyama himself.】 There is also no binary opposition between Gosho Aoyama and the animation production team based on character favoritism or plot preferences. The animation production team sometimes deletes key Haibara Ai/CoAi scenes; for example, in TV Episode 140, Conan and Ai holding hands was animated as him grabbing her wrist. However, considering that Gosho Aoyama sometimes subtly satirizes the production team in the original manga, arranging for characters who have highlights in anime originals and movies (such as Haibara Ai) to undergo "character assassination" in the original work, and considering the production team's role in IP promotion and that publicly opposing them would damage the IP's reputation, etc.[45], 73's attitude toward the production team might be one of neither total affirmation nor public opposition, letting things take their course.
Piano piece, usually appearing when Ai is sad or frustrated (TV 231, TV 270, M5, Live Action 2, etc.), often used during Haibara's internal monologues.

Manga Chapter 820: Gin recalls Sherry's naked back again (the nudity was removed in the anime).
Aoyama has also stated that the reason Sherry's naked back appears in Gin's mind is indeed becausethere is a relationship between Gin and Sherry, but no further details were disclosed.
Opposing Views:
In Ai Haibara's memories of her sister, her sister urged her to quickly find a boyfriend and stop making drugs. From this, it can be inferred that Gin would not be Sherry's official boyfriend.Could they be bed partners?. Gin's feelings for Sherry might only be unrequited love, or a distorted emotion as a killer, feeling excited at the sight of Sherry's impending death. Furthermore, Aoyama himself has said, "Gin will not fall in love with anyone”.
RegardingOpposing Views's opposing views:
These few memories of her bare back are clearly too explicit, indicating that at the very least, Sherry is a special existence in Gin's eyes, suspected to be unrequited love or a sexual fantasy.
