Shigure Ui is a female Japanese illustrator and manga artist. She currently resides in Tokyo.
Originally from Yokkaichi City, Mie Prefecture, she attended an art university. In 2015, she began serializing the manga "Kankitsu Punch!" in the magazine Manga Time Kirara Miracle!, marking her debut as a manga artist. In 2017, she graduated from university and moved to Tokyo, where she worked at a game company. 2017年，从大学毕业，前往东京发展，曾在一间Games公司就职。

History
On November 2, 2018, she first appeared in a parent-child collaboration on the channel of her VTuber "daughter"Oozora Subaru, appearing as a static illustration and maintaining that form for quite a long time[5]. She joked, "If I'm collaborating with my VTuber daughter, does that make me a VTuber? Even though I only have a 'soul.'"
On January 1, 2019, during a New Year collaboration with Oozora Subaru in the "New Year's Q&A Session," a marshmallow question asked "What do you want the other person to do?" Oozora Subaru expressed her wish, saying "I want Mama to start moving." This, according to Shigure Ui, was the catalyst for wanting to start her VTuber career.[6]
On April 20, 2019, she revealed her Live2D model on Twitter.[7]
On May 18, 2019, she set up her own channel and held her first livestream, officially beginning her activities as a VTuber.[8]

On January 20, 2020, during Shigure Ui's retrospective stream, a childhood/loli-fied version of her character debuted and was very well received.[13]
On February 17, during a brain training stream, after failing the test, the game gave her a brain age of 76 years old. To cover up the 76, Shigure Ui transformed into her loli form and changed the "6" in "76" to claim she was 7 years old, then nonchalantly closed the brain training game and started Tetris 99. After losing in Tetris 99, while scanning the room rankings she spotted the name Toya, wondering if it was that lolicon. She declared, "If it's the real person, I must defeat the lolicon," and Kenmochi Toya quickly responded in the chat. Since Kenmochi Toya's feminized fan art is also quite famous, under Shigure Ui's initiative, the two made a duel pact: "If I win, Kenmochi Toya becomes a high school girl for a stream. If I lose, I'll stream as a loli."[16] During the duel, Shigure Ui ambitiously used a stacking strategy, attempting to uphold justice and defeat the lolicon, but unfortunately self-destructed and lost, finishing 98th out of 99 on the overall rankings. After her defeat, Kenmochi Toya swiftly dropped a wordless Super Chat like a stone tablet, and Shigure Ui thanked him for the Super Chat through sounds of regret. Amid her audience's jubilation (?), the loli stream was scheduled.[16]
This stream was widely praised, causing the specific name "Shigure Loli (しぐれロリ)" to spread widely, spawning numerous fan works and clips. The loli reputation quickly resonated even overseas.[17] After the stream, Shigure Ui thoughtfully posted the hand-drawn Kenmochi Toko transparent material on Twitter. In the comments, the two exchanged barbs, foreshadowing the next battle.[18]
On March 3, during a drawing stream, she created the high school girl character "Andou Rainbow = Johnny Johnny" together with the audience.[19] She was subsequently thrown into prison for this, but successfully escaped.[20][21]
Indeed, as Toya predicted, Shigure Ui's viewers colluded with Kenmochi Toya. With both fanbases supporting Toya, the cornered Shigure Ui defiantly said she hoped Toko-chan would practice "Onegai Darling" for the performance...[22]

- The pen name's "しぐれうい" has no specific kanji notation.
- The surname portion of the pen name comes from combining her love of winter and rain — "shigure" refers to sudden showers in autumn and winter. The given name portion originates from the character Akemi Yuu (朱臣憂）。
- ) from the manga "Kyoko: Time Stranger Kyoko" by manga artist Arina Tanemura, which she loved reading in middle school. The name's origin is apparently the kanji writing "†時雨憂†" with a very chuunibyou-style feel, which she finds quite embarrassing and thus avoids explaining the origin of her pen name.[29]
- When she first participated in a collaboration show with her illustrated characterOozora Subaru, someone on Twitter asked what the correct kanji notation should be. Her answer was: "There is no specific kanji notation. Since the game uses 'Shigure Ui,' please use that one as well."[30]
- In a later stream after her VTuber debut, when she mentioned the name originated from Akemi Yuu and was asked again about the correct kanji, she responded that the previously decided name "Shigure Ui" gave a gentler impression, and she expressed that she liked it. Despite having hardly played games since childhood and knowing little about them.[32]

- Her VTuber debut was prompted by her VTuber daughterOozora Subaru's wish. According to later accounts, she had no particular reason to debut as a VTuber and was entirely influenced by Oozora Subaru — it was a feeling of "if she says so, let's just do it." When she participated in collaborations onOozora Subaru's channel before being a VTuber herself, Subaru already praised her as "having a streamer's awareness."[6][33]
- During a New Year's collaboration with Oozora Subaru on Subaru's channel in 2019, Subaru wished for "Mama to start moving." According to Shigure Ui, this gave her a sense of having received an "indulgence," and she began seriously preparing for her VTuber debut.[6]
- Before her daughter Oozora Subaru, she had only watched video-format VTubers likeKizuna AI、Kaguya Luna、Dennou Shoujo Siro. It was only after being inspired by Oozora Subaru's debut that she started watching livestream-format VTubers.
- JKShe's obsessed with female high school students, particularly 17-year-old second-year high schoolers, whom she considers the most balanced — that age of being on the verge of maturity. She claims that during her art university entrance exam, she drew a high school girl and passionately discussed the beauty of JKs with the interviewer, earning their agreement and passing the exam.[39]
- “You play games like Ui Mama”
- Having rarely played games in the past, her gaming skills are around average level, but she has an intense passion for games — what's colloquially called "bad but addicted." Because she always challenges strong opponents, she frequently gets destroyed, earning her the "loser" attribute.
- Despite being repeatedly beaten by fellow VTubers and viewers during streams, when interviewed she still answered "my best game is Tetris 99." When asked why she gets beaten, she blamed it on "everyone online being too strong."
- Because of Tetris 99, she connected with the otherwise unrelated high schooler Kenmochi Toya and started battle streams. She finds the connection through gaming to be a mysterious fate. In a Tetris 99 match with only 99 players against Kenmochi Toya, she was quickly eliminated at 98th place, earning her the title "98th place (98位)."[40]
- Because she's famously bad at games, within the VTuber community of her acquaintances, her name became a sort of adjective, giving birth to the expression "like Ui Mama (ういママ並)." For example, independent VTuberTenkai Tsukasawas called "you play games like Ui Mama (ういママ並)" by viewers when performing poorly, which motivated Tenkai Tsukasa to intensely prove his gaming skills out of frustration. - At the end of 2021 and beginning of 2022, she participated twice in Inuyama Tamaki's Sugoroku board game with a penalty of writing a poem for the last-place finisher. She came in last both times.
- When she frequently encounters strong opponents she can't beat or gets scared by horror games, her frustrated catchphrase is "I'll turn you into a doujinshi! (同人誌にするぞ！)" — a quintessentially illustrator-like threat that appears in many situations.[44]
- She has been aware since childhood that she's not good at singing, which is why she calls the Little Ui singing stream "a grudge I can never forget in my lifetime," and has always looked forward to getting her revenge.[33]
- A year and a half after her debut, she finally decided on her stream tag, fanart tag, etc. Because of her friendly style of bantering back and forth with viewers, she also has the alias "Punching Ui (なぐれうい)," and viewers suggested "Sandbag" as the fan name. - During a drawing stream, she created the high school girl character "Andou Rainbow Johnny Johnny," also abbreviated as "Andou=R=JJ," together with viewers, which became somewhat of a meme character. This project was influenced by VTuberNatori Sana's character creation project. Thus, it shares a similar naming scheme with Natori Sana's created daughter "Saigou Rice Cake Irori," abbreviated as "Saigou=R=Irori," and the two are often mentioned together.[19]
- During a WIXOSS card pack opening stream, believing she could write it correctly, she blazingly fast miswrote Nijisanji memberGundou Mirei's name as "Gundou Mirei" (with the wrong kanji for "Gun"). She later sent an apology gift and was forgiven.[46]
- In the "Brain Training" game by Professor Ryuta Kawashima of Tohoku University, her final result was a brain age of 76 years old.[47]
- In the first "Oozora Family Academic Test," she lost by a massive margin compared to pre-election predictions, becoming the academic bottom of the Oozora Family. As punishment, she had to append "Oozora Family's Idiot" to her Twitter name for a period of time.[48]

- When participating inHakui Koyori's 2025 birthday concert stream, after dancing "Loli God" and "first changing into" 9-year-old Little Ui — prompting Koyori to try to get closer — then "changing back into" 16-year-old first-year illustrator for her "second" appearance, her forward-leaning neck posture (猫背/rounded back) became a widely spread meme. It was even compared to the Elden RingElden RingVolcano Manor NPC "Rya" (who has a similar forward-leaning neck). After seeing the related posts, Ui said, "I don't know what these foreigners are saying, but I feel like I'm being made fun of."[54]During her own 2025 birthday stream, one second she was emphasizing "maintaining a beautiful posture," and the next second she relaxed and went right back to her rounded-back posture.[55]Initially, people speculated it was just awkwardness from unfamiliarity with motion capture equipment, but feedback from industry professionals suggests it's actually an "occupational hazard" — caused by leaning her neck forward to look at the drawing tablet due to poor sitting posture while drawing. Shigure-sensei mentioned in a recent chatting stream that her Chinese name was previously "时雨忧 (Shigure Yuu)." However, after communication, the teacher and the subtitle group hope that Chinese fans continue to use "Shigure Ui" or "時雨羽衣" to refer to her~
